How does /k/ clean and store their water cans?
Without water you're dead after 72 hours tops no matter how much ammo you got and how riced out your guns are.
So how do you guys treat your water cans/jugs?

I bought me 3 Scepter ones I use for different tasks between hunting, fishing and just general preparedness.

Here's what I do
>Throw in a dishwasher tab, fill with water and let it sit for several hours in the sun.
>Rinse at least 3 times with fresh water
>Put a fresh hanky over the opening and secure it with a rubber
>Tilt the jug a bit so the opening is the highest point and let it sit in the sun or near a heat source for a couple of days
>Throw in a coffee filter full of dry rice and seal it shut.
>Put it in the basement in a dark corner

That's at least when they are new. After I used them I usually just rinse them once and let them dry before I seal em again with rice.
How do you guys do it?

I have a well on my property. Not sure about its quality but with some filtration system I'm 100% sure it could be made into drinkable water. How retarded am i for wanting to hook up my house to it in case the main water pipe system fails? Is there a system that doesn't cost an arm and a leg but could still work in a pinch?

Pretty sure there are a ton of laboratories even in your state/country that will check your water samples for a few bucks.

Boil and Purify, then drink. That's the most basic and simple thing you can do

This, maybe you'll even find some students working on something that'll do it for free

How many Grunts do you think have accidentaly drank gasoline because they fucked up and mixed the cans?

You need to test it well once to understand what's in the local water table but after that, periodic testing to catch anything that happens after heavy rains (fertiliser run-off etc) and projects like mining, large excavations, factory fires, chemical spills etc.

I basically live on unfiltered well water in Ukraine but it gets tested regularly and reports are published. It's also free, not counting carrying 6l jugs up the elevator.

A few remaining drops in a jug are probably just unpleasant and not dangerous. Most things can be diluted to the point they're harmless.
The exceptions are generally heavy metals and bacteria.

>How many Grunts do you think have accidentaly drank gasoline because they fucked up and mixed the cans?

In the last several decades? Not many. At least not in the US military. Here's why:

1) Since GWOT water cans must be sand-colored. No other colors allowed.
2) Water cans must have pallpable WATER writing on the side
3) Water cans have only one handle whereas fuel cans have three (go check the Scepter website so see what I mean)
4) If you open up a can full of gas or diesel you'll smell it real quick even at night.
5) It's completely VERBOTEN to put anything into water cans but water. And trust me, higher-ups are super anal about it for good reasons
6) Water cans have these two additional screw caps in the actual large lid. That's another palpaple thing.

So no, I don't think many modern grunts accidentially drank fuel because a long history of gas-sipping dudes led to a very long line of measures that make it very hard to accidentially take a big ole gulp of F-34

Oh and I forgot: Even if there are some gas cans that are sand colored too they must have their upper third painted in a color that fits whats inside (e.g. yellow for diesel) See pic related. the two right ones are diesel

You might not need any filtration at all but you'll need to get the water tested. If it's got something like heavy metals in it then you'll need an expensive purification system.

Thanks bro. Yeah, I took a little head dive into the topic when I bought those three scepter cans. Wanted to be as much on the up-and-up and by the book as possible.

So I did my research and now my three cans...
>Sand colored (obviously)
>The recessed WATER lettering on the sides is painted black with a sharpie
>The narrow fronts and backs have WATER stenciled on them
>On the sides there's a fictional unit number (e.g. 12-3 HQ) because that's what units sometimes do so their jugs don't get mixed up.

I know it's pure autismo but I learned lots of new stuff and my shit looks nice now.

Depends on the brand. Usually 3-4 years but you could probably extend that to 5 or 6 if you double the dose and treatment time.
Pool shock is a cheap option for treating bulk quantities of water. It lasts ~1y if you buy it in a bag, 3-5 if you get the stuff in a bucket.

This days they make these little electrolysis machines that can make it when you need it, so you don't have to worry about storage.

Dont go that way
>Acquire several 5 gallon water dispenser jugs
>Keep them sealed
>Put each one into a thick black trash bag
>Put in your basement or the coolest, darkest place in your home

Commercially bottled water will last at least a decade when stored properly.

I was fairly sure it was GWOT era and probably in Iraq but the reverse-image search only said that the oldest example was at least 10 years old so I didn't want to talk out of my arse about it.

dont get "students" to do it for "free" like this literal donkey is suggesting. there are indeed a ton of labs in your state that will test it professionally for a few dozen dollars. it is not expensive.
