The lead in the air when we shoot isn't coming from the projectiles; it's coming from the primers, so switching from lead bullets to copper and steel like Europe and Asia are forcing their hunters to do will not stop the problem.

What about the heavy metals contained in gunsmoke, from the primer (and propellant, I think). Are those not a far more serious health hazard since you breathe them in? The lead encased by the bullet’s jacket doesn’t really have a way of getting inside you.

Anyways, banning lead ammo is a good thing because this will ignite a fire under the asses of ammo manufacturers, and they might finally figure out that all rifle bullets need to be VLDs, otherwise the BCs will be lol-tier. Once everyone is up to speed with my infinite wisdom, we can then go back to lead-core bullets with maximally high BCs. But apparently this transitional learning period is gonna have to be painful, and forced.

What a terrible planet on which to be a firearms enthusiast. The ideal bullet is solid tungsten with a gold jacket around the bottom half. But those are some of the rarest metals in our crust, and it’s a PITA to make anything with tungsten.

And that’s just the stuff our anti-gun planet is composed of. We also have an atmosphere that slows bullets down (gay).

it is possible to use iron based ammo
lead shortages in WW2 meant that by the end of WW2, the standard round for the MG42 was essentially just a mild steel bullet wrapped in the thinnest lead jacket possible and
the round had to be slightly lengthened to accommodate the reduced density of iron vs lead, but it otherwise had identical properties to the lead round

no reason you couldnt keep using that today, but presumably the lower melting point of lead just makes it too cheap to produce

Anon, copper is also not safe for living creatures to consume (part of the big push to get rid of lead ammo was that the birds were eating lead and dying) and it's also not safe for the soil (not a good idea to plant crops on top of copper). It has the exact same environmental hazards at a slower pace.

Probably not till we figure out how to make a self lubricating dense polymer that’s cheaper per pound than lead…. Beat the price and you’ll change the market fast

A ventilation hood is probably unnecessary, a good indoor range should have an HVAC system installed to help move the dust away from you as you shoot and bring in cleaner air so the room doesn't fill with smoke. People who go to a properly filtered range will have a better longterm outlook compared to ranges that don't utilize a filtration system.

Lead is inexpensive, soft and does not damage rifling, has a low melting point making it very cheap to manufacture from, and most importly is very dense creating the best ballistic coefficient of any material that doesn't cost several times more.

Most inexpensive alternatives have been outlawed as armor piercing handgun ammo, even if rifle ammo. You can't legaly coat some iron in polymer for example.

Tungsten is very hard, damages rifling as anything other than shot or a core that would be banned as armor piercing, and rapidly wears any tools used to work it making manufacture expensive. And is toxic.
Bismuth is rare, expensive, and mainly is mined as a small byproduct of lead mining. So you have to mine tons of lead to even get small amounts.

Copper has a much worse BC requiring you use lighter projectiles for a given caliber that retain energy worse.
Copper also absolutely destroys trees. You drive a copper nail into a tree to kill it.
Copper bullets hitting trees (and copper jackets for that matter) just killed that tree.

Lead primers have also proven long term stable for decades. Most green alternatives have not. Do you want your stockpiled ammo or several year old defensive rounds to go boom when you need it? Im sure many that don't like you having guns wish all your ammo regularly expired too.

Unless you breathe the fumes casting bullets in poor ventilation, or shoot insane amounts like some sponsored professional, lead shouldn't build up in you.

Then how about bismuth other than cost? Dense and soft, can be melted on stovetop while being non-toxic.

Other than cost and the fact that is is mainly produced by mining lead?

Well there is also the fact that it is rare and if you think cost is bad already if you increase demand a lot it will rapidly become many times more expensive since you cannot scale up production.

>DU is technically radioactive but it's just beta decay
Wrong, it's alpha decay, very easily stopped (even a sheet of paper) but it is the most damaging type when inside of your body, like dust inhalation.

It only creates dust when it impacts armor, in which case it's less dangerous than a live person shooting back at you.

honestly, how much lead is even there to make so much munition? do the used up shrapnels, bullets, etc., get recycled?

>do the used up shrapnels, bullets, etc., get recycled?
at ranges, they definitely are
in war time? it was probably occasionally done, but it isnt SOP since crawling around a battlefield looking for bullets is a lot of effort for little reward
and the bullets would need to be cleaned of contaminants before being melted down which is just a lot of work

>so switching from lead bullets to copper and steel like Europe and Asia are forcing their hunters to do will not stop the problem.
1. That's not the issue that's trying to solve.
2. Use lead-free primers, you retard.

Found the lead breather lol

Anyway good thread. Wouldn't the "perfect" costless bullet (at least for hunting/soft tissue damage) be a gold hollow point in a copper jacket, possibly with some third in-between "cup" components to keep the bullet intact as it's fired? Kind of a fun thought exercise.

Yeah, gold would be an ideal substitute for lead in almost every way. It's the scarcity and cost that make it an issue. We need that real lead into gold alchemy to make better ammunition.

If I could make the perfect ammunition, it would be a tungsten penetrator core in a gold main body with a copper jacket. We keep the brass case. In the current economy and state of industry, it would be insanely expensive.
