learning to shoot with no friends
Has anyone become proficient with guns entirely on their own? My ex gfs brothers were pretty good with guns and ex military and they were graciously hinting at taking me under their wing for their SHTF cadre. But then she dumped me and made them think I'm a pathetic faggot so that's the end of that.

All my other irl friends are söy. I don't even tell them I own a gun, even though 2 of them used to be pro-gun before some blue haired girl wrapped her legs around them.

I have a shitty .380 I've never even fired. In theory I know range safety but I don't know the etiquette of going to a range or how to act or behave or any of that. I know looking like a tard is normal for getting into any new hobby but I don't want to do that when firearms are involved obviously.

Has anyone done it? Just gotten into shooting fully by themselves?

Just go.
The range safety officer isn't going to rape you or anything.

This. Tell them you know fuckall and want to know the rules. Honestly the range I've been going to for 15 years still asks me every time so i don't think youre going to even have to ask yourself desu.

-Buy a gun that will motivate you to shoot it.
-learn the basics of how it works. Dry fire at home.
-once you've reached a level of comfort, go to a local match. Maybe steel challenge to start if you have it near by. Look on practiscore.
-go to a match with movement IDPA, USPSA, etc.
-watch ben stoeger training videos on YouTube.
-dryfire some more

Dawg I started on my own not knowing dick about shit by just bumbling into a pawn shop at 18 with my first paycheck and started with
>a clapped out mosin soaked in cosmoline
>an sks with no rear sight leaf spring
and finally,
>an 870
Oh, and the only help I got was by a fatass hick gun store owner that thought it was funny to tell me ammo has a waiting period, but he'd let me take it home same day for $10. This was in 1988 so I didn't find out he just robbed me of $10 until I got home and called my dad to tell him, who then laughed his ass off about it.

Fuck forgot where I was going with this.
>1. You're in a golden age to get started on your own
>2. There's a lot less shops that get away with dicking people
So just go there and tell them you're new. If they're a shop worth a shit, they'll set you up right.

That’s how I did it. In the Summer of Love I decided I should get into guns. I come from a left leaning family and I’m a friendless loser, so I was entirely on my own and even had to keep it to myself. Literally just go to any indoor range, rent out a gun, watch that dumbass video every indoor range forces you to watch about range etiquette, and just ask questions whenever you’re stuck on something. You do get asswipes at LGS/ranges but most of the employees there are chill and helpful people, and would much rather get asked questions by new gun guys than by emergency services, so don’t be afraid to annoy the employees with questions. Explain to them that you’re new to guns and they’ll be more understanding and maybe even excited.
Getting into guns yourself can be a lonely and disheartening experience, but you learn to appreciate the solitude of it. I actually prefer going out to the range by myself. It’s fun going with others obviously, but there’s no greater peace in life than having a range bay all to yourself

Basic proficiency for handguns and rifles is pretty simple to do on your own. You can easily read up on the basics or watch videos to learn the manual of arms for your gun, gun safety, etc. Then go shooting. Don't try any crazy John Wick shit at first, just shoot at paper targets. If you don't feel comfortable doing that then book a beginner lesson or two and go from there.

I do feel it's difficult to get good at shotgun shooting without experienced help. The reason is that when you're shooting clays and you miss as a noob you generally have no idea why. When you shoot a pistol or rifle at paper or steel you can see where the bullet hit. You instantly know if you shot too high, too low, whatever. But when you miss a clay pigeon all you know is that you missed. An instructor or someone who knows what they are doing can stand behind you and watch where your shot pattern went, giving you that feedback of what you did wrong. Once you get sufficiently experienced then you can often tell what you did wrong without needing anyone to tell you, but before then having someone to help is a huge benefit.

YouTube has resources for basics of marksmanship. It'll get you started. From there you can either take a class from a local range or a Project Appleseed kind of program, or try your luck solo. I reccomend the class so you can make friends.

Nah I think they've lost all respect for me and to some degree that's fair. I'm over her but she sent me some toxic message out of the blue that makes me think she's bitter. I also don't have her brothers number or any contact for them.

I'm 32. I don't know what else to say. My friends are gay liberals? Am I supposed to deny that these guys have a designated sort of group that all prep together? My ex gf kept saying if anything ever went down that every male in her family would load up on a truck including me and go get whatever was needed by force. I nodded but inside I was laughing because I have zero fucking combat experience and I've gotten so absentminded the past 5 years I don't know if I even trust myself with a gun at all anymore.

Alright thanks. Is it a good idea to build your own AR 15 as your first long arm? I've disassembled air shit in the past, this is obviously totally different but my only point is that I can at least use tools

My friend got a gun when I was 20 and we went to the shooting range. I rented a few and kept going back, then started buying some and got a membership at the outdoor range near me. Just go shooting. Pay for a class on the fundamentals if you want to save ammo money.

If you're mechanically inclined its piss easy to put together a functional AR-15. It takes experience and a touch of autism to build a good one. It also depends entirely if you're wanting a cheap basic bitch stepping stone gun, or if you're willing to buy once cry once.
>id recommend the later tbqh
/arg/ is better suited to get you up to snuff on what's good and not in this day and age. I've got all the ARs I want, how I want them, so I haven't kept up on the gear side.

I came from a limousine liberal family with luxury beliefs who disowned me because of my opinions. I learned how to shoot mostly on my own. I started at an indoor range with a bunch of ammo and just asked the ro's/counter staff what I could do to improve my groups, a few thousand rounds later I was shooting pretty damn well and perfectly comfortable with my guns. I since stopped going to ranges in favor of inna woods shooting for the savings and freedom, but it's a good place to start because there's people there who are usually happy to give advice.

Try to message the brothers on Facebook or Instagram.
Say "Hey 'XXX', I know things ended with me and 'XXX' on a bad note, and sorry to contact you - if it's irritating for you just let me know and I'll stop - but I am trying to get more involved in shooting and need some advice on how to start, and can't ask anyone else I know because they're all not into guns. If you can spare the time, could you tell me where to start our give me some pointers?"

Done. If they message you back, roll from there. If they don't, or tell you to get bent, do so and don't message them again.
You're 32 and can't handle the risk of confrontation to this extent?
Come on dude. Maybe this attitude has something to do with your split.

You're not really gonna be good unless you get professional training, and that means joining a profession where they train you in tactical things. You can take classes taught by government rejects but they're extremely bad and dangerous.

Would it be worth enlisting in the national guard? I'd be interested but I don't know how those guys make ends meet.
Anonymous No.64138811
You could probably figure it out by yourself via shooting and watching jewtube videos OR you can pay for a class, 1:1 or group classes, prices will vary wildly. I took a single class with some guy at a local range for 60 bux because I had no one else to show me and from there I was good to go.

Military money is shit, just research and find good classes. You won't know a clown when you see one so that's difficult. But military training isn't worth the damage to your brain and body and shit pay. They qualify you on one rifle once then that's it.

I really don't understand what the fuck happened to society. I've always been up front and willing to forgive and apologize when appropriate.
But as technology improved, people just ghost or block you. Talked to a co-worker yesterday, her own sister left her on read. Insane.
It's like the values I've been raised with and adopted now count for nothing, and nobody bothered to tell me how things are done today. It's difficult to trust people because I don't know who's going behind my back.
Unfortunately I had a situation not too dissimilar to OP and people who I got along with did not respond. For fuck's sake I saw one of my brothers' exes out in public one time and still talked to her like a normal person, despite me obviously taking my brother's side on their dispute.

You join the military. You are only embarrassing yourself by larping and pretending to gain any level of proficiency outside the military. This is why actual civilized countries have controls on weapons. It’s no surprise that when Mercian young men search for weapons proficiency materials, they immediacy find spaces inundated with Russian threat actors and propaganda.

Unironically get a ruger RXM, it's basically a premodded Glock for $400. If you want to add a suppressor or compensator in the future get the threaded barrel model, and new grips (g17/g26 legnth) are supposed to come out this fall.
The most important rule of gun safety is to have fun :)

I'm self taught and generally a better shot and more consistently anal retentive about safety than just about anyone I know. the secret, as with anything, is literacy, patience, and halfway decent practice routines.

my military relatives are all guntarded unless it's a platform they trained on, and even then they treat whatever they handle like government property: beat it to hell and keep it smeared with ten pounds of grease. you do realize basic rifle qualifications are not that crazy, right?

YouTube and practice. It's how I learned to shoot a handgun accurately. also try asking the guys who work at your local range, I know a lot of them are fags but they might be willing to help a newbie out.

Indoor ranges have fewer rules than outdoor ranges, so try indoor first. Put your eye/ear protection on before you go into the actual shooting area. There should be two doors, so that people in the staging area dont get tinnitus if someone opens one door. Make sure the first is closed behind you before you open the second door into the shooting area. Keep your guns in your bag till you get to your lane, which should have a bench behind it. Load mags at the bench, but dont load your gun till you're at your lane/stall or whatever. Always keep your gun pointed down range or at the ground with your finger off the trigger.
For holding the gun, grip/stance, watch youtube videos. You'll need to bring your own paper targets or buy them there.
Most importantly, don't spill your spaghetti at the register. They'll ask you what caliber you're shooting and if you have steel core ammo, and try to sell you both targets and ammo.
As for actual shooting and fundamentals, again, youtube. Practice aiming/dry fire etc at home before you go.

Is it worth taking my .380 Ruger lcp to the range?
Anonymous No.64147519

yes

if anything that's the kind of gun you'd need the MOST practice with, the flippy snappy handgun. I can pretty confidently say that despite not being great with my rifle I can much more easy to maintain the standards and its kinda hard to hold one "wrong" or shoot "wrong"

a handgun can definitely be shot "wrong" or make you do stuff that'll give you bad habits. Im left eye dominant with my handguns but right handed so I tend to wanna cock my head into my shoulder like it's a stock and it fucks with my whole stance. I shoot better and more consistently when I stand nice and square and make a triangle and keep my head straight. I punch out my pistol from my sternum while I find the front sight and try to keep my arms in a stiff but not like "death gripped" stance

and then yeah, just practice, it takes a lot of practice to get pretty good with a handgun, they're genuinely tough to shoot well and even more so when they get smol
