It depends. If I'm somewhere I reasonably expect to encounter a bear, I'll carry a .357 or a .45 Colt with heavy ammo. I do have .44 Magnums but I prefer the single action for the LARP. Otherwise, I carry a Glock 19.

Usp45 loaded with 255gr hard cast lead moving 1250fps. I'll be fine, especially if it stands up like that and exposes heart/lungs. I feel pretty confident my .45 super loads would break a shoulder if it were charging on all fours, but I'd much rather have a clear shot to vitals with less bone in the way.

How well does the 44 mag snake shot pattern? I’ve got about 200 of the empty capsules and keep debating loading some for shits and giggles.. although I’m also tempted to throw some in 444 marlin cases and see what happens…

I work in bear country as a wildlife biologist, working directly with grizzly bears. Carry a 10mm or .45 Super hard cast Buffalo Bore ammo. Most people opt for 10mm, lots still use 9mm and .40 S&W including CLEOs. Back in May a bear was killed in defense using hard cast 9mm.

Big revolver cartridges suck and most of the documented failures of bear defense rounds are people using revolvers because capacity is king. Bear spray is something kept on everyone regardless of cartridge carried because that deters the vast majority of attacks especially from black bears, but even 95%+ of grizzly attacks as well.

Same. T. Southern California anon. Our black bears are chill. During the most recent California fires, a black bear took refuge in my uncle’s neighbor’s house. Bothered no one. Lived in the basement, ate in the kitchen. This went on for a couple days. Everyone lost their minds though.
