I carry a 22 for self defense
I care more about carry weight and accuracy than "stopping power". If I'm going to carry a gun all day every day, it needs to be light. And then if I have to actually use it, I need to be able to hit what I'm shooting at. So a 22 pistol with a comfortable grip, good sights, and a 4"+ fixed barrel makes more sense than a .380 pocket pistol with a 2.5" barrel that weighs almost the same. I would rather put 2 shots into someone's skull with an accurate 22 than spray their lung tissue with 380s only to have them still fighting. Modern 22s with quality ammunition can be extremely mechanically reliable. I can also train much more cheaply and develop high proficiency with my pistol compared to a 380.

Basically if I'm not carrying a full size "real" gun like a G17, I feel more comfortable carrying a 22 than most other subcompact options because at minimum I know that I'm going to shoot it very proficiently. There's a massive market today for mini 380s that in my opinion are flatly inferior to a 22 in the hands of someone who trains, unless we are talking about literal front pocket carry where the external dimensions become a limiting factor.

Tell me why I'm wrong.

Most 22 ammunition meets FBI penetration minimums out barrels around 4" and in my experience 22s can be extremely reliable if you stick to ammunition the gun likes, especially high velocity ammo that extracts easily. The only 22 pistol that can malfunction in a serious way are older target designs like the Ruger Standard and Browning Buckmark which can get a case stuck in between the recoil spring rod and the next round. With modern 22s that can't happen and you can clear any malfunction in the blink of an eye.

Why do people talk about weight like even a 3 pound all steel gun is cumbersome? Are you not capable of walking all day with a few extra pounds? Size for concealability i can understand, but if you wear a half decent belt and arent a child then weight should be a non factor in any handgun. Then again most of you seem to say you go around wearing pocketless basketball shorts all year round, so maybe you are children after all

The problem in my experience is that 22LR ammo exists in two flavors. The only ones with truly reliable primers are the match ammo like Eley Tenex, but that kind of ammo rarely has good penetration spec. The hotter more "field" oriented ammo usually meets FBI minimum spec for penetration, but you've still got the chance of a bad primer even if the gun normally cycles fine.

Good luck telling the court you planned to double headshot people before you even holstered the gun. Never, ever say this ever again. Palantir might log the next one.

Also, never, ever, ever actually shoot someone in the head TWICE. If you shot someone in the head once they better have had a gun aimed at you, or have you pinned down with physical superiority and potentially deadly intent. It is the hardest self defense action to justify. If you shoot someone in the head twice you are guilty of manslaughter/murder.

9mm cultists really dont understand that all rounds fired from a handgun act the same when they enter a body and stopping power doesn't exist. Opting for 9mm just gets you more recoil and a much heavier gun with no additional benefit. 22lr is king for self defense.

Correct. The brain and spinal cord are. The human brain is about 6" in diameter when viewed from the front. For comparison the vital region of a grey squirrel is about 1.5" and I routinely kill these animals with 22 pistols at distances in excess of 20 yards.
Anonymous No.64138509
>>64138497
The biggest difference between the two is penetration. Some 9mm ammunition can penetrate 50" in ballistic gel. Very useful if you have multiple BGs lined up in a hallway or something I guess. But in terms of terminal performance there isn't a massive difference in the likelihood of immediate incapacitation, nor in the likelihood of survival with a given level of medical attention. At least not nearly as much as suggested by the difference in cost, recoil, and other disadvantages.

All mammals instinctively stabilize their heads while running for image clarity. Humans are the most visually oriented of nearly all mammals and are also bipedal and vulnerable to major injury from tripping and falling. When humans are engaged in strenuous physical activity their heads remain almost completely stationary relative to their body. It is not that much more difficult to shoot someone in the head who is running at you vs someone who is standing still.

It is when you have 2 seconds to hit a crackhead with a homemade knife sprinting at you and you get an adrenaline dump realizing "holy shit if I don't hit this guy's off switch he's gonna gut me like a fish". I can't tell if this is trolling or not, if hitting people in the head while they were moving was that easy then you would see way more officer involved shootings ending with headshots than you actually do. In fact most headshots in police body cam footage are clearly accidental and simply lucky when a cop is blasting off a mag at someone. Also inb4 cops don't aim at the head because they don't aim to kill

Excellent choice king, carry what you like.

Too many people try to min-max their carry like its a video game build. The best gun for you is the one you like to carry and shoot the most, because that means you'll be good with it and always have it on you.

Being armed is prudent because you want to be able to fight back, but what min-maxers forget is that life is random and chaotic, the most important thing is to have a weapon that you are confident you can use well and the will to fight and win.
