I carry a 22 for self defense
I care more about carry weight and accuracy than "stopping power". If I'm going to carry a gun all day every day, it needs to be light. And then if I have to actually use it, I need to be able to hit what I'm shooting at. So a 22 pistol with a comfortable grip, good sights, and a 4"+ fixed barrel makes more sense than a .380 pocket pistol with a 2.5" barrel that weighs almost the same. I would rather put 2 shots into someone's skull with an accurate 22 than spray their lung tissue with 380s only to have them still fighting. Modern 22s with quality ammunition can be extremely mechanically reliable. I can also train much more cheaply and develop high proficiency with my pistol compared to a 380.
Basically if I'm not carrying a full size "real" gun like a G17, I feel more comfortable carrying a 22 than most other subcompact options because at minimum I know that I'm going to shoot it very proficiently. There's a massive market today for mini 380s that in my opinion are flatly inferior to a 22 in the hands of someone who trains, unless we are talking about literal front pocket carry where the external dimensions become a limiting factor.
Tell me why I'm wrong.
