I can't claim to know much about it honestly. Its just a pistol caliber AK that takes a helical mag, right? Whats awful about it? Do you mean aesthetically or mechanically? Are they unreliable?

The mags are unreliable and 9x18mm sucks. It also probably didn't benefit from having chambee tolerances (deliberately) so loose that it could feed 9x19mm.
It's already been replaced by a 9x19mm AK thing that takes conventional box mags.

This. I have used the PP-19 in Syphon Filter, BF2, BF3, BF 2042, payday 2, and all of the early Ghost Recon games. I really wish they were easier to get parts kits of. I love them.

One of the STALKER mods for SoC had one with misaligned sights. Couldn't manage to fix it or get attachments to work, but mag dumping point blank at low level mutants was fun and a good use of all the looted 9x18 I'd horde and never sell.

In reality, this thing was the brainchild of Kalashnikov's son and the whole reason it was funded and received (limited) adoption was to give him a win for reasons of national pride. It was conceived to be a compact-sized LMG replacement for counter-terror purposes which would pair with steel-core ammo to defeat light cover/armor. In practice, the helical mags are unreliable and just plain awkward to carry. You have to use the same rig to carry RPK mags to carry PP-19 mags, and can only carry one 64rnd PP-19 mag in the same pouch that can carry x2 45rnd RPK mags. So the same loadout carries (less) of a (less) powerful ammunition, even if the gun itself gets more maneuverable.

Are they? Or are you taking some bad experiences with calicos as indicative of all helical mags?

Its a submachine gun, they're all ballistically dogshit. 9x18 is just rebranded .380, which is perfectly fine for killing shit. Also 9x18 is like 20% shorter than 9x19, so for a helical gun its probably ideal, since shorter rounds means more rounds in the mag without increasing OAL.
