What kind of sword is Blade using in the movies? It's definitely NOT a katana. Is it purely a fantasy sword or is there a real world analogue?

There is no historical evidence for that style of sword ever existing. There are examples you can see in musems in Japan, like the pic you posted, but they are modern.

The "ninjato" is a product of modern ninja fiction, probably based on misunderstandings of older straight japanese swords (tsurugi), and the fact that some katana and wakizashi are very close to straight, or perhaps confusion with straight-bladed Chinese swords.

It's been so long that I don't remember everything but I'm sure I cringed at the other gadgets and the guns too.

So expecting the sword to be a late-empire era Glaius in the Iberian legionnaire style is just ridiculous.
It's probably based on a Gladius because they look cool but stretched out to long-sword length and given a... cutless tip? Dadoa or machete maybe? And a Tsuba-like Gladius hilt because Katanas are cool as fuck.

Whoever was prop maker for this (I bet it was the raping-blob lol) was probably having a good ol' wank over this, throwing in all sorts of edgy shit from every era.
And since Whistler is apparently a /his/k/ autist and probably forged it himself, who the fuck knows what he was thinking of except that it would look cool as hell cutting vampire heads off.

It's not a historical sword, and in universe it's just something Blade and Whistler made. From its length and flexibility and general shape it would be most comparable to a Chinese straight sword, though it almost has the cross section of a Backsword I saw somewhere.

The Chinese jian is the closest resemblance. Obviously some cinematic liberties were taken with the trick anti-theft device. Other than that, blade profile, hilt length, and minimalist handguard are in line with many traditional jian designs.

Not even close. Arming swords have have a different blade profile with a more dramatic taper and a cruciform hilt with a gigantic pommel.

Ok kids, gather around. Let Uncle Oldfag tell you stories of ancient times.

You might not remember this, but back in the late 1990's and the early years of the 2000's, there were a lot of this type of "it just looks cool" bullshit going around.
There were many names for it. Mall ninjas, tacticools and the like. But they all shared same characteristics. They would take some somewhat-functional item, and just decorate it with random-ass bullshit parts. Style was emphasized over functionality. As long as it looked cool, it was ok.

Take a look at these Cyber Samurai -style blades. Could that work as a blade? I guess it could. But is it structurally or ergonomically reasonable? Nope. But it looks rad as hell, so that's what they roll with.

hell, I kinda wanted some of those. But then again, I was a teenager and foolish. I never got any of them, for even then I realized it was all bullshit. Cool, but bullshit.

So my advice to you, younglings, is that you should not look for "historical forebearer" for these devices. They are made-up fantasy toys. Sure, they may share some design elements from historical designs, but they mix and match them in any random combinations with other historical/mythical/scifi/fantasy elements that they just happen to think look cool at the moment. Usually made cheaply from shit chinesium that will break if you hit plywood with it.

Don't think about it too hard. Sometimes it's ok to admit "Yeah, it's a cartoonishly designed prop or mallninja wallhanger." It's fine. Some of them, like the Blade's sword, is specifically designed for a movie. It is only designed to look cool on the silver screen.

Man, in the future archeologists will have a field day trying to figure out from comic books and cross-referencing them with what rusted remains of these mallninja-blades is left, just WTF were "The early second-millenial dueling period" warriors thinking. Probably highly-advanced schools of combat with their secret techniques passed down only amongst the inner circle of adepts. ...or some shit like that.

But no. Just like in the past, it was artists who have never seen combat trying to depict something they have seen in a mallninja store, thinking it is an actual weapon of war.

And everyone will still think that five point palm exploding heart technique was a historical martial arts move.

If you want to see so cool, but batshit insane shit like ridiculously impossible kung-fu weapons, I would recommend a film called "Zu Warriors" from 2001.
https://www.imdb.com/video/vi1893925145

That movie is PEAK insane mallninja shit. It starts from the setup that "everyone is already an immortal superhuman warrior" and then starts to turn up the heat. This movie has so much wire-flying chinese actors and poor quality 2001 CGI it probably contributed to chinese steel and computer industry.

You like ridiculous kung-fu movies? Say no more, senpai. Just grab a cold one, leave your brains at the door, sit down and enjoy.

Kind of contradictory statements. Props aren't often dreamed up from first principles, even if it was fabricated directly from a piece of concept art the concept artist looked at pictures of swords and found a blade and a hilt he liked the look of.
Maybe this one is too obscure for us to crack but other times you can tell in 2 seconds that Han's blaster is basically a c96 with a scope, you never know who recognizes that bulge until you ask.

>>64147469
It comes up often on sword youtube where they get their hands on something too stupid to be real like a pocket sized 'assassin's crosbow' and know immediately it's a toy. With other weapons they can be certain they're real because you found dozens of the same kind of weapon rusting in a battlefield dig. And in between there's definitely a big gray zone.
Even better humans haven't just now gotten retarded about collecting historical swords. People 200 years ago were making up bullshit versions of what they thought looked like something cool from 500 years ago.
