Kel-Tec might as well be the sole innovator in the US firearms industry. They popularised .380 pistols with the P3AT, came up with the first bullpups with non-shit triggers and ambidextrous ejection (RDB and RFB), bullpup lightweight shotguns, Kellgren innovated before this with the TEC-9, etc.
All of their guns are imperfect which is to be expected considering they are first generation. Once the industry realizes how viable and successful their concepts are, they start producing better second gen guns and drive them out of the market (P3AT, SUB2K, kinda with the STINC P50). Because of the nature of their company, they can't cultivate a reputation of reliability, so they make up for it with affordability, causing a feedback loop.
Kel-Tec basically exists as a way for Kellgren to popularize his ideas and fund his prototyping. Imagine what he could do if he wasn't restricted by shitty laws and the whims of retarded consumers. (hint: Interdynamics MKR)
