When I was watching "Whale Wars" it can out that it was basically impossible for even a modern sonar equipped ship (the Japs built specially designed anti-Whale Wars "security ships") to detect a rope floating in the water in their path, or even almost completely submerged soft buoys. And/or....they can kinda detect it, but that shit is basically everywhere, all the time, except in rare occasions/locations.
Chi-Com fishing boats will act like they are laying Long Lines and just fishing but will be deploying barely floating mines connected by 800ft cords. A slow moving 200ft or shorter fishing boat will be fine with 350ft of cord (the mines will be designed to equalize cords when ship's bow pulls them), but a 500+ft long ship, especially one moving at 10kts or better, will have two mines exploding on either side.
