NTA but basically it all started when one dude figured out that our brain is somewhat working like an antenna, it can emit and receive radiowaves (all due to the constant electricity of our neurons), then some other guy find out that using magnets you can turn off some parts of the brain to make people thing differently and finally you have now multiple different people who think it'll be cool to create something that can read people's minds and translate them to constantly keep them on watch.

in reality the technology for RNM isn't there yet, the concept exist but creating something that can read your neurons working at a distance as more chance to fry your brain that actually doing the intended task. Should you still be afraid it might exist ? yes, you should. But you should be more scared about your modem being used to know exactly where you are in your own house instead.
