I have a Kershaw Scrambler.
>Folding or larping?
Folding
>How will you larp with it?
I most recently larped with it to help connect the couplers on some finicky model train cars in a model train museum I was volunteering at.
>Blade width?
About 0.10 in.
>Do you have a loicense to own a knife?
Rocking in the free world over here
>We're in a recession, how are you still buying knives, how much is all this costing our family?
Somewhere between $30-$40 at a gun show.
I want a DPX Gear knife but I like that guy:

What would be the best large fixed blade knife for months-long trail hiking? Must be light and preferably have a 7" thin blade and a guard. I'm talking something you could kill attacking bears and mountain lions with. I got inspired by this thread:
>>>/out/2832953
Those hiking poles people use seem like they could be a good defense, albeit not lethal.
I hate the bugout, but for larp scenarios like this where weight is important, at only 1.85 ounces, it is tempting. One could get by doing most things with a bugout and have the larger knife for larger knife things. When going into towns, the larger knife could be stored in the backpack. I don't think "survival knife" capabilities would be necessary, most of these hikers probably don't even have a knife, and they get by.
https://www.bladehq.com/item--Ka-Bar-Dust-I-Fixed-Blade-Knife-Green-GFN-Black--211501
https://www.bladehq.com/item--CRKT-Hissatsu-Black-Fixed--4859
^These are my top contenders. Both around 8 oz, so 3/4 the weight of a Ka-Bar 1217. The Dust I has only a 6 " blade, and has a glass breaker on the pommel, which James Williams does not approve of. The Hissatsu doesn't have a guard, which I don't approve of.
Of course, I wouldn't hike these wilderness trails. I've already found myself and know too much thanks to Dave Paulides, just thinking about what would be the very best tool for the job.

A Glock in 10mm.
Otherwise, for outdoors you're looking at like a Gerber Strongarm or Cold Steel SRK type deal. The CRKT looks too thin for anything more than fileting fish and light outdoors work.

Yes, it was designed to be abused.
If you don't want an axe, I would at least recommend carrying one of those portable chainsaws for the thicker logs, if you're doing that sort of camping and cooking in the wilderness.

My fourth Troodon... I like this shape. Super stabby with that semi-sharp false edge and fine tip while also being substantially better for slicing than the dagger shape. Of course the drop point is even better for slicing than both but still, the bowie is a nice middle ground.
My current CT blade shapes ranking:
Drop point > Bowie β₯ Interceptor > Tanto > Dagger > Hellhound > Razor
Interceptor is the only good meme shape ive seen... the hellhound and razor are dog shit and I dont know who is buying them or why. They look cool I guess? If you're stupid?

I've got one of those. Well sort of.
I was posting some Eickhorn factory seconds last thread, and there's one more I have, which is one of these b2005 bayonets except in the configuration with the highly polished guard and shiny blade they (as far as I know) made as a parade version for a Swedish royal wedding. but on mine it was (faintly) laser marked with the canadian symbols and also has a regular combat knife end to the handle instead of the proper bayonet connector, turning it into a quite strange german-canadian-swedish combat knife - bayonet chimera. and again, no sheath.

>>64164816
I have one. It's not a batoning knife but it's a damn strong pocket knife. The halfplates give it a decent amount of rigidity, but you can go get aluminum scales if you want more. Used to carry it constantly until I started doing more cramped-spaces work and then I switched to an Ultratech. I've taken down cardboard boxes completely with my MSI with no issues. Poly scales, no serrate.

A gun.
Outside of that it's any blade that you feel comfortable using and are competent with. What works well for one person won't for another, and the vast majority of people aren't proficient in using knives for combat situations. So picking something familiar that fits well in your hand is important.
Also it's important to remember that whatever knife you use to defend yourself with is likely getting confiscated and possibly lost forever, so carrying that family heirloom or an expensive knife that you can't replace isn't the greatest plan.

For a long time Benchmade was a top tier knife company. They always have (and still do) made good knives. The problem is now their prices are 3x what they should be, and the industry standard has risen to meet Benchmade while Benchmades just stayed stagnant and raised prices. Benchmade has always had one of the best warranties; now other companies warranties have gotten closer. Now everyone can put axis locks on their knives, and s30v is just mid compared to modern steels. Benchmade just hasn't moved at all while everything else has progressed.
I'd still say a Grip or Mini Grip is probably a decent enough one-and-done knife for most guys and it's one of the few knives BM makes without crack smoke prices.

here it is. it's got a really interesting blade finish i've never seen anywhere else, a sort of coarse feeling, relatively fine brushing in the direction of the blade that yet is also quite reflective. maybe it's chrome plated, not sure. the picture can't really show it. on the shown side you can faintly make out the canadian maple leaf and the company logo, the other side doesn't have any markings.
as you can see, instead of the proper bayonet adaptor (which on the swedish parade bayonet is also mirror polished) they added a very basic butt end like on the ParaCommando combat knife.

That seems to be specifically because the scale maker just straight up copied the original design instead of making their own

I feel like someone like Flytanium would be a much bigger target if it was just about aftermarket scales in general but they make their own designs

I realized it kind of was confusing regarding deploying using your shirt with a standard folder (non karambit). With a standard wave folder you probably would want to deploy only from pocket, with the karambit folder your grip is different and you can switch from closed to open in the standard grip with the karambit starting in the closed position in your hand just by snagging it back on your jacket sleeve or belt or whatever. Probably not something you would want to do with a regular folder since the grip would be awkward.

It's good. It's a fighting / utility knife, not a bushcraft knife. It's heavier than necessary. It's dangerous. There are plenty of other Kabars and similar knives that are worse and better.
A cold steel srk will rattle if you throw it at a tree a few times and use it hard, Kabar might bend or break if you abuse it too.

I would take care of it and use it, but not abuse it. It's lasted this long. You can delight your grandfather telling him how you are taking care of it and putting it to good and appropriate use. If you're not an experienced sharpener, I'd get a fixed angle system like a sharpmaker or a worksharp precision adjust, lansky, etc. 20 degrees per side is probably good. I guess kabar doesn't sharpen knives for customers like benchmade and spyderco. Even without sharpening, it will be a good letter opener and package opener forever.

Also i have two $50 bhq gift cards i can redeem, can both be used for the same purchase right? What should i grab for free? Maybe something cute and funny like a victorinox cadet in fat carbon scales.

I didn't fuck up the tip when i made on my first real sharpening effort with proper diamond stones, I did all the research on technique before attempting, but what i didn't research was the nature of the specific steel i was sharpening. I was getting so frustrated that I couldn't get a smooth hair-splitting edge on my D2 knife, i was like what the hell, this is just toothy as hell no matter what grit i hit it with, or for how long. Whether i used 600 grit or 1500 grit, it just made my fingernail vibrate violently when i ran it down the edge, and yeah it was a screaming good cutter, but it was no the kind of edge i was trying to give it.
Eventually, later i was told D2 just makes toothy edges and there isn't a lot i can do about it. I wasted a lot of time and metal due to stupidity.

>Also i have two $50 bhq gift cards i can redeem, can both be used for the same purchase right?
I was curious about this when making a purchase there recently. I had enough points to get $25 off, and they only had gift cards in the amount of $5, $10, $20 and $50. I figured in the worst case, I'd just use the $20 one if I could only use one since there was no $25 gift card option. I redeemed both $20 and $5 cards and when I went to checkout, there was an option to automatically apply them both to my purchase, $25 off. So that worked for that specific situation. The confirmation email they sent still had the original total before the $25 discount, but I was charged $25 less on the actual card, which was also the price at checkout.
IDK about entering in 2 codes, and I don't think you can use 2 different credit cards (like if you wanted to use up the remainder of an outside gift card,) but there was an option to automatically apply multiple redeemed blade club points gift cards at checkout without even having to enter any codes.
They are giving away a free $15 2.5" Gerber fixed blade with orders over $75 with the promo code DIBS at checkout right now. Those giveaways change throughout the week, they had a free cheap set of 2 Gerber utility knives a couple weeks ago.

>D2 just makes toothy edges
chromium carbide inclusions in D2 can get pretty big, depending on how much care was taken with the annealing (probably not much)
you can get CPM D2 which is gonna be more homogenous and with smaller inclusions
however, you are amplifying the problem by using diamond, which is harder than even the carbide so it's going to leave big gouges
what you want is to juuust expose the tips of those carbides
so, use waterstone and start with a smaller grit than you would normally. don't deburr on steel, that will also create rips and tears in the material, just lap till it falls off from fatigue

Most potential users/buyers of this knife are not at all interested in how this or any other knife works. The main thing is not even how it looks. The main thing is involvement in something, in some brand, some designer, some materials. And the most important thing is some treasured letters and numbers on the blade that indicate the brand of steel.

Russian's spitting fiery truth at the beginning of this video, turn on auto-generated subtitles.
My new Military 2 has a little lock stick, but no big deal. I grew new muscles in my pointer finger after 1 day for that. The lock stick increases the harder you deploy it. If you look at a Military liner lock, where the tang contacts the liner is crescent-shaped for a reason, and I suspect it's an intentional design akin to this. I can get zero lock stick if I press down on the compression lock, roll the blade out with my thumb, and then gently let go of the compression lock. It nestles into place. If you whip it out, it fires the lock bar further down into the lock. You would want that for harder use where great force is being exerted upon the lock.
He complains about the finger choil, but the finger choil is a good thing, here's why: even if you don't choke up on your knives while soifacing, if you have your hand in the normal grip, and the blade closes on your hand, that finger choil will close on your index finger instead of the cutting edge.

How does a normal steel knife compare to a ceramic knife?

Ceramic is more flexible, yet more brittle than steel. It stays sharp for way longer and is "have to send it back to the factory or just throw it away and get another" difficult to sharpen. It gets sharp and also dulls by microchipping. I heard ceramic knives don't have sharp tips because it would be too dangerous, but it's probably more because it would be too fragile. They're really cool, IDK why I haven't gotten one yet for the kitchen.

ceramic knives chip easily but are incredibly wear resistant. They also simply do not corrode. For large amounts of delicate cutting, ceramic is great because it will virtually never dull. For any kind of cutting that could chip the edge, never use a ceramic knife because sharpening it is insanely difficult. Steel sharpens easily, still has pretty good wear resistance, can be far more chip resistant, and also pretty resistant to corrosion although never immune like ceramic is.
All in all i find ceramic knives useless.

Since it seems only that little hook at the end is broken off, what Id do is measure the length, diameter and wire thickness and figure out the spring constant with a little experiment, and then see what spring manufacturers have for sale that most closely matches those specifications.
You coukd also try to bend the end of it into a shape resembling a full spring again (due to the high number of revolutions tak8ng ine out to turn into a new end wouldnt reduce it in length much and thus hopefully still work similarly enough) but take the measurements first before you fuck with it.

SHE has now been arrested and faces the British legal system. her younger sister has likely become shit on the dicks of the trash that was harassing them. (there's actually no reports to that, but rapes don't get reported in Britain). the younger girl definitely knows there's no help coming for her.
this is a big part of why the St. Georges flag is suddenly showing up everywhere. when young girls can't even walk home from school without needing weapons, the country has fallen.

whats the best fixed blade you can buy for under $100 that would be strong enough for survivalist abuse? i have a glock knife which can be a good prybar and used to baton with but is there anything with a wider blade? basically i want something like a kabar but one with a full thick tang. i was looking at the coldsteel SRK. i already have moras for lighter duty cutting and food prep tasks that require fine dexterity. now i want something bigger that will also double as last ditch defense against animals or people and can be used to chop down small branches and make firewood or open cans in a pinch.

sounds like germany so that's what I'm assuming it is. if so, those 12cm are for fixed blades, folders have no length restrictions.
there's loads that fit the bill, in my opinion one handed nonlocking is the somewhat "safer" choice to go with since the other option carries the risk of encountering a particularly dextrous and particularly assholish officer who can open just about anything one handed and then has a go at you and your locking grandpa knife.
so for some options:
>Spyderco UKPK, Urban, Squeak, Metropolitan and Byrd Tern
>Boker Plus XS
>Bestech Junzi
>i think Kizer has some but don't remember the name
>Midgards is coming out with the Little Viking Automatic, it opens automatically but doesn't count as an auto under german law because it doesn't lock in place automatically after opening
>Rescue Knives with a specific, outwardly blunt hook at the end of the blade are exempt from German weapons law since they count as tools, no matter their features. this means that stuff like the Boker Kalashnikov Rescue OTF, the Mikov Rescue automatic, or the Hubertus Rescue can be freely bought and carried. the blade shape does make them less handy than a normal knife of course.
>you could also attach a Kwik Thumb Stud to many 2 handed slipjoints
If you want to go the other route there's stuff that realistically can't be open one handed so should be pretty safe, especially from makers of Swiss army knives
>Victorinox has locks on regular models in the Evolution line (carried over from their former competitor Wenger, who was quite innovative with mechanisms), the 111mm line and 130mm line (but don't buy just any, do check first).
>all or most Swiza models lock, many are available in 1hand and 2hand blade
>Mikov, Boker, Hartkopf, Otter (and so many others) all have locking classic knives on offer, I'd generally advise you to get one where not much of the blade looks out of the handle so it's hard to grab for a 1handed open

Thanks for the recommendation frens. I am looking into growing a pocket knife collection because of a Swiss Army knife with 2 blades my brother gifted me.
I looked through the list. Those are a lot of 'modern' knives which can look threatening to nosy cunts in my country (whose favorite pastime is reporting random people to the police), what if I want something grandpa-looking but not too expensive. I assume something like a barlow would be nice for a starter, but the ones from Solingen cost like 160 yurobucks. I am also looking at a K55K mercator too, because of the history and its cheap.

These would be my choices for inexpensive grandpa knives. Buck no longer makes the single bladed version in the USA, so I'd go with the stockman. I carried the LST for a cardboard knife at work for years and it held up. Coworkers would be a little shocked at the little thing, I never pulled out the Spyderco Military in front of them. You can flick out the LST by holding the blade though. None of these would be effective as weapons.

As for the razor, 300 / 600 / 1000 / 5-6000 / 10k+ strop for the first go. You need your stones to be absolutely dead level, moreso than just doing kitchen knives. There's a bunch of videos on the topic that will do better explaining than anyone here can do.

never heard of this brand before in my research. is the quality equal or better to Schrade Imperial or Rough Ryder?

Considering getting Opinel, I already have SAK, the buck looks good, but it seems too expensive when buying from an imported store in Yuro. That Gerber looks neat, and I am tempted, but all the stores I found here only carry the version with a hole in it, so it counted as one-handed with lock. Bummer

Technically, I can, but fixed blades are more likely to get you into trouble if the wrong people or the wrong police see it, even if it's under the legal length. Folders facilitate far less trouble.

Just get the little solar, its not amazing in quality but it's cheap and has its own vintage charme. as i said, 70s production but never used.
And by the way, in terms of opinel, consider one with a plastic handle, it might look less nice (especially in comparison with stuff made from posh woods like ebony or walnut) but the wood can gunk up or swell in humid weather and make it hard to open. An Opinel DIY also looks very tool-like and has a built-in bit holder

Strops flex
Stones don't
While it's possible to remove a burr with a stone it's more likely you fuck up and add a slightly different micro bevel or go too hard and push the burr to the opposite side.

Tekline SAFE. But itβs like 500 bucks. There is a reason why no one does a 1 piece hollow handle knife.
