>Modern war is going to be nothing but longer and longer ranged missiles, better sensors and stealth until the end of time
>It all comes down to whoever can get the first and longest ranged shot off, and it will never change until the sun explodes

Fucking hell

Just wait till we get augmentics and Teleportation.

Unless something fundamentally changes. It's not necessarily easy to predict either, like how modern electronics were pretty much a thought experiment until they started changing the battlefield. Range played a role, but fundamentally you always had the eyeball as a limiting factor in the kill chain. This is not the case anymore obviously.

I think that artificial intelligence/automation will play a big role in future wars, because automation allows for longer ranges. Also, ranges might eventually become irrelevant, as in, if every weapon has ranges beyond the requirements of conflicts, say they can just go anywhere on Earth, range will become secondary to something else.

it's about killing speed.
usa deploys genetic weapons that can be triggered at any time to kill billions. usa also has nano bots sitting on every square meter of the enemy countries and on the bodies of hostile apes. they are activated at the press of a button killing the enemy within seconds. surprise is key. every death in every battle and every war even every melee fight is because of a surprise.

Eventually we’ll just have our super AI calculate which country/AI would win the war and adjust things accordingly.
If there are even wars by that point.

Yep this is why the NGSW is so game changing. Everyone stuck in the 300m-500m small arms engagement range while America is playing at 1000m-3000m that compliments their arsenal of heavy weapon arsenal and additional fire support.

That's interesting.

Since WWI (although I guess you can see this in development during the U.S. Civil War), the density of infantry in a "line" has been steadily decreasing. A defensive position can now be held with fewer soldiers because they have long-range direct fire weapons and can call in indirect fire support, and it's best to try and hold it with only a few soldiers because enemy artillery can wreak havoc. This also makes "infiltration" tactics (as the Russians have been using) so important. So to counter that, you need to be able to mass reinforcements fast enough to seal the breach before it does real damage, and also drones can help monitor infiltrations through "dead ground" and blunt them, hopefully reducing the need for infantry. And then the infantry have direct-fire weapons with double/triple the effective range.

War evolves as technology evolves, and considering the speed with which technology advances it becomes impossible to predict the near future of combat with any certainty.
What you can predict is the ethos of keeping it simple and cost effective while using the best available technology. That's exactly what we see in Ukraine on both sides, using the cheapest available tech en masse to achieve the highest rate of attrition possible. And once an effective counter to this is found then warfare strategy will change again. The cycle repeats itself.

Think about it. Gruk son of Ugruk must have raged on his cave painting forum about how spears with its longer reach is ruining the rock meta and how using wood in spears and arrows is gay and not trad and how rafts will totally make a comeback over war canoes.

>want daemon trophy
>daemons vanish back to the warp when "killed"
>what do
>use utterly broken paladin ability to keep daemon from going back into the warp so you can mount it in your meditation chambers just to flex on Chaos
40k hits just right sometimes.

now it's rarty/missile/plane/drone spam, before it was arty/tank/plane and before that it was arty

Drones and artillery have 20+km range. Noone will bother at 3km range any more. Least of all with small arms.

Good,
I want to die a quick and easy death after living a fulfilling life with my family. Not in a first row of a meat grinder after years of mandatory service, just because some retarded leader who I haven't even seen wants his page in history books to be a few sentences longer. In a war, there is no honor, no chivalry, no fairness, just a victory or death. And technology is minimizing the death aspect of it. I would much rather serve now then ever before (not going to tho, my time is better valued where I am now).
Also as an EE I fucking love explosive RC thingamabobs.
>inb4 gay
no you
really, sex with a woman changed my perspective on this a lot, a lot of (you) here need to try it at least once.
or dont
let my genes win unopposed
