China has a latin script version of their writing called Pinyin.
It uses a few diacritics to specify tone but is readily readable to foreigners and arguably useful for literacy.
It's much, much better for keyboards than their existing systems for typing characters which requires learning a whole new writing system.

Because Hanzi is the singularly worst from of writing still extant, even the Chinese find it inefficient under normal circumstances. And considering the prestige the military enjoys in China, you're not going to get the best educated either, so not everyone is going to understand your missile character. This is when everyone is speaking them same language. When you throw Chinese dialects and minority languages into the mix with obscure characters you're not going to be pronouncing even close to similarly to standard Chinese. To be able to effectively communicate to even Chinese standards, they are forced to use Gwailo characters

Problem is that the characters carry more meaning than the sounds in Chinese, to the point where the complex interrelation of the radicals and characters is core to understanding Chinese. To any literate Chinese speaker this would be equivalent to tearing the soul out of their language.

Of course that's why Mao nearly did do that, along with killing no small amount of China's literate population. According to Chinese Communist Hagiography Stalin talked Mao out of just using latin character Pinyin for Chinese, and to settle on simplified characters. While it's a rather unreliable source, I do personally believe this happened, because I doubt Stalin would pass up a chance to fuck over another country.
