Morning /k/, soon I'll have to stay for work reasons in a Middle Eastern country where absolutely no weapons are allowed.
I'm looking for ways to defend myself without running into trouble when interacting with the authorities. Things that are useful but don't immediately read as weapons and can be carried by a normal person who will read as a foreigner. Basically like pepper spray (not allowed) equivalents, scissors, anything that will give the maximum bang for your buck in this situation.
Any ideas? This is a country where knife crime / muggings are very common but guns are very rare. Police activity is also very intense, so I expect to be checked for weapons. I'm a "businessman" in the third world, I can't carry things like a hammer which will be immediately suspicious.

Generally fucking around in shithole countries means bribing the cops to fuck off, which being a westerner means you pay a lot more. Walking sticks with a good old nigga-b-good hunk of metal hanging off them are a good accessory, the best accessory is a local terp-fixer you can work with that wont sell your organs to chinese and knows were the decent food is and the indecent women be at- as well as the usual places that are just dumb to go into without some kind of great cultural learnings.

By far the best way of working in foreign shitholes is in the military, I've done it as an engineer after I left the army and that's about the best advice I can give you. Carry a big stick, beat cunts about the head and just get the fuck out of there before anyone shows up. But a good terp-fixer will save you having to do that

In countries like these the criminals are easily armed with illegal guns

Anyway... muggers operate in packs of around 4 so you're not fighting off 4 machete-armed turdies with anything you can carry on your person that isn't gunpowder-propelled. The best is just to avoid danger places and dial up your situational awareness like you're in the Green Zone, or Detroit.
I grew up in a high crime area. Since I was a kid I was taught to watch for tails, on foot and on wheels, watch for ambushes, and always enter and exit cars and buildings as quickly as possible. Locking the doors fast became a reflex action. My father's version of Moscow Rules. And that's how I could even spot now and then clandestine drug deals and armed robbers casing the neighbourhood. Well, this town's gentrified considerably now, but it's still excellent advice I think.
