Cheap high efficiency thermals and budget night vision have been "around the corner" for over a decade now, the prices have only gone up.
A suppressed AR15 with a steel can and a thermal optic has been a requirement for the kind of slugfest happening in Ukraine. There's footage of guys shooting from cover with an AK or AR with a compensator and immediately getting lit up by guys with suppressed thermal equipped AR15s (who didn't give their position away when shooting.)

You also won't understand what a thermal user's capability or weaknesses are unless you are also experienced with them, leaving you at a massive disadvantage.

Unless you are operating as a team that all have their own night vision, you should avoid any and all confrontations at night. Thermals can be buggy and laggy. Hybrids are great, though admittedly haven't had much time on them. If you have night vision, you also need IR illumination and laser. If it's just for fun, you'll toy around with them for a few weeks and get kind of bored, they're not fun training unless you're friends also have them. In combat they can be a necessity for security.

I treated myself to a pard nv007v for my bday. it's a clip on to your normal scope. it works really well, and it's super neat. bought it for 200.00 second hand. it get's used my my spring air rifle, and it was little fiddly getting things sorted, but it has been reliable.

it's neat stalking at night. i am quiet, so i have snuck up on rabbits and coyotes as well as gophers. they don't realize i own the night now.

don't have any opinion re: retarded SHTF scenarios, although I supposed I could put it on my AR.
