Why in fuck was it translated as PLA so you get "PLA Navy", "PLA Airforce" etc when the correct translation is Peoples Liberation Force?
Jun = force.
Lujun = Ground force.
Haijun = Ocean Force.
Kongjun = Sky Force.
PLAN, PLAA etc makes no fucking sense in english. PLOF, PLSF,PLGF would be far more accurate to how it's actually called in chinese.

I made it happen as part of an elaborate scheme to set up a "no PLAN survives contact with the enemy" pun for when the inevitably start shit in the pacific and get rocked

What you suggest makes more sense but it's just historical and they've no real need to change it for gwailos.
It makes sense to themselves in their own language and that's all they give a shit about.

Because it's a metric vs imperial situation where Burgerland does things in the opposite way from how the rest of the planet does them.
American "armed forces" is what the rest of the planet calls "army".
And American "army" is what the rest of the planet calls "ground/land forces", one of the branches of the army.
Whoever originally came up with the translation wasn't a burger and/or didn't follow burger naming conventions.

Because the Chinese name for the PLA is "中国人民解放军", or "Chinese people's republic liberation army", and the services are named that plus their branch, e.g. the PLAAF is 中国人民解放军空军, or "Chinese people's republic liberation army air army". PLA, PLAN, PLAAF, etc. are the proper translation of their official Chinese names. You're free to use colloquial names like "the Chinese army" or "the Chinese air force" if you like.

OP is kvetching that it is NOT in fact the proper translation. He is right that the character translated as "army" can also be translated as "military" or "armed forces". As your own example shows, the Chinese words for "Navy" is basically "Sea Army", or alternatively, "maritime force".
In the same way, the US Air Force's Chinese name would be translated as "American Air ARMY", and the US Navy would be translated by the same rules as "American Sea Army".

海軍 kaigun: sea + army (IJN)
隊 tai: service/force/troop
陸軍航空部隊 rikugun koku butai: army + aviation + force (the IJA Air Force), 部 is a modifier for branch/department
海軍航空隊 kaigun kokutai: navy+ aviation + force (the IJN Air Service)

自衛隊 jietai: self-defense + service (the JSDF)
陸上自衛隊 rikujo jieitai : land + SDF (JGSDF)
海上自衛隊 kaijo jieitai: sea + SDF (JMSDF)
航空自衛隊 koku jieitai: air + SDF (JASDF)

Ironically OP himself committed a mistranslation, that word doesn't actually mean Sky, which is 天 meaning about the same as the Latin caelum

The Air in PLAAF actually means Void, for about the same reason that early European philosophers and scientists called outer space a "void"

It's the VOID ARMY!

Because calling them a Paper Tiger over and over again gets old

The PLA uses the roman letters PLA in its own branding. You can find PLA soldiers in their civvies with PT gear, branded clothes and such with "PLA" clearly used.
It's not to different from the fact that the USAF once was the USAAF.
So apparently they don't think it's such a crazy nomenclature.
