It's impossible for your average civilian to put genuine patina/wear/abuse on their rifle. You can shoot a rifle at courses and events for years and it will never look well worn like a service rifle. So they paint them because the paint quickly rubs off and makes it look like the rifle has been used far more than it actually has.
