Why would they make a 10" barrel with a 6" flash hider? Why not just use a 16" barrel instead? The weight difference must've been minimal it makes no sense to use a flash hider instead.

When ArmaLite began selling that rifle, they sold it as the AR-15 - ArmaLite Rifle 15. Unsure why they used "AR" on their shotguns as well but I digress. The "M-" designation for military equipment isn't usually the same name that the OEM gave it. M-16 is more like "service rifle 16" and the M-4 is "carbine 4"

Fixed front sight is actually a pain in the ass when you start putting optics and accessories on it.
Also no mid length gas because it didn't exist until like 20 years ago.

I much prefer retro. However there are a few things you an tack onto a Retro that make them a more useful gun for home defense/ranch rifle duty/shtf etc.

Build an 11.5/10.5 A1 upper with a pin and weld Moderator, put a microprism on the carry handle and a white light either taped on or bayo lug mounted. Anderson lower with a plastic CAR stock and A1 grip. Good ass sling, either and Israeli or a Canteen Strap on para loops.

To me that's the perfect setup to be both cool as fuck and practically useful for shooting trash in the back yard and defending the chicken coop from vicious woodland enemies. It lets you shoot effectively at night.

Thing is light as fuck and handy too.

You want pencil profile, and skinny 6 holes handguards. If you want to be really cute you can rattle can fuck it with Rapco colors.

Modern. I find the OG carry handle & front sight ugly, and the clamshell handguard is the single most visually offensive feature on any firearm ever made. It's beyond awful looking.
That said, I love a lot of cold war era and older aesthetics in general, just not the AR.

What do you even call a rifle that is an A2 at heart but is wearing magpul? I like the carryhandle irons but the magpul furniture fits my hands better. Yeah I could probably buy actual A2 furniture if I wanted it to look the part but I'm not buying stuff that I know I'm not going to use.

Retro ARs are ugly as sin, but so are modern ARs. The best ARs were from the quadrail+magpul MOE and CTR era. Hopefully we can retvrn to this once all the super safety fags realize that paper-thin M-LOK handguards are shit for heat mitigation. I will admit that M-LOK looks better on ARs than anything else.

Now we live in a timeline where .300 blackout exists to try and (fail to) compensate for the increasing need for shorter barrels when you can just have peak 5.56 ballistics in a shorter OAL, better weight distribution, and better ergonomics

It's more about the quadrail acting as a heat sink. Lightweight mlok rail + pencil profile barrel = dramatically shortened barrel life if you're magdumping. It's even worse when you're shooting steelcase bimetal jacketed shit ammo, but I don't think that's much of a concern anymore due to the sanctions.
