I primarily do religious studies as a hobby and this is a pretty rare thing. Mahayana, Theravada? Native born/Multi-generational, convert?
I've talked this over with Taoists before. Western "converts" (if you can call it that, they don't tend to actual follow the religion meaningfully) say that joining the military is against the Tao and say a Taoist can't do it, Taiwanese and Mainlander Taoist say cultivating martial gong fu into wu wei is a means of accessing the Tao's path and see no problem. I'm curious if Buddhism has this "native" vs "western convert" divide on opinions with military service?
Sorry for the questions. I could probably ask redditors this but they're entirely unreliable with religious matters in my experience, and I never met a buddhist soldier. I somewhat want to assume it's similar to some devout followers of specific Christian denominations that they avoid active combat roles but find the idea of service as fine, but I could be wrong. Out of the ones I interviewed on the topic (Catholics, Orthodox, Sedevacanists, Coptic, Presbyterians, JW, Mennonites, Lutherans, Baptists. Sunni Muslims, Twelver Shia Muslims, Zoroastrian, Nepali Hindus, Zhengyi and Quanzhen Taoists, Navajo lifeway, Orthodox and Reform Jews) I have got some interesting justifications and variety of answers, but somehow never came across a Buddhist that I'm aware of

And if they are in high demand fields, they will always have access to military facilities worldwide. High compensation, great benefits, great pay, great work locations. Pretty much all of the cool shit enlisted guys get, but I can be a full adult and don't have to do fitness every month. I don't have to report to people legitimately less qualified than I am, generally. I will say though, no gi, va does suck; those are legitimate perks to serving - VRA/VEOA preference never effected me in the slightest; companies only care about clearance levels and they pay for them.

To be honest the benefits of the military are very tempting, and I felt that the experience would mature me as a human and help me understand the world a bit better, as well as the obvious physical fitness it requires. Currently Im seeing boot camp as a test of my mental fortitude, an opportunity to face all the challenges like a monk and stay focused. As for Medic v. Nah it's alright with the replies. This is literally something I'm autistically hyperfocused on as a niche. Worked with various professors, phd holders, masters students ect. in religious studies and participated in various field studies and have interviewed monks and theologians on all sorts of things, and have been questioned by these people why I go out of my way to do it without earning a degree or anything. I brought up Taoists because both the east-asian religious connection and also it's a niche I've somewhat inadvertently become an expert in because I was frustrated many of the books in canon have no translation that I learned Chinese to read them, and I've been told outside a few autists in Germany (who I've met and worked with) that makes me one of the few non-Chinese natives to have read the Taoist canon and the only one I know of who isn't a Taoist. As you might understand, knowing classical Chinese primarily allows me access to the Chinese Canon, not the Pali canon, within Buddhism, and I've hardly scratched that area of the field since I've focused the last 15 years on Greek Orthodoxy, Sufi Islam, and Taoism.

In my own personal religion military service is seen mostly positively but killing in war still requires 3 years of repentance, which is why I went into Logistics. In the same regard, western Taoists take the principle of action-without-action to mean completely peaceful, but historically Taoism was fairly militant with several of China's famous "80 billion deaths, 4 trillion people cannibalized" civil wars being started by local Taoist cults (not associated with the state sponsored Taoist priesthood which required examinations and certification). I'm curious if examples can be found in Buddhism, I know Siam, the Khmer, and Burma has expansionary empires while being governed by Theravada Buddhism, so I wonder how it was justified. Surely there must be some doctrine which allows military service for these empires to exist as they did?
