Been thinking of getting a s&w model 36 before I have to work in Gary Indiana in a few months. Wouldn't consider myself a gun guy, and this would be my first gun purchase, but I grew up shooting tons of guns. Thoughts on this? Is this an impractical choice?

It's fine, just put some pig blood in the tip of some hollow points and seal the with wax or something so any muzzies you blast go to muzzie hell.

Unless you have the iq of a kumquat and are lazier than fuck, a pocket autoloader is an all round better solution. More ammo, smaller form factor, more concealable in more ways, and with ammo that is practically just as powerful as that at the ranges you're going to defend yourself at anyways (7yds or less). An LCP max can be had for less than $250 and you get a 2nd 10rd mag.

Now you will have to clean, inspect and actually fucking practice with it understand Tommy?

if you're gonna carry a revolver it might be a better idea to get one with a concealed hammer so it doesn't snag

Honestly whatever snub you get depends on your preference for ergos and cylinder rotation. My EDC is a 4th Issue Colt Detective Special, and I fucking love it. Wish I got a bobbed hammer or a shroud, though. Kinda jabs into your stomach when you sit down. snagging is irrelevant if you just don't yank it all stupid like, thumb over the hammer.

Ruger LCR .22 or 9mm (so you'll actually practice and afford to). If you absolutely insist on a a wheelgat.

I used to do cable fiber work down in Florida while in college, was shocked at how many sketchy situations that kind of work sometimes can put you in. A Model 36 will be fine, espc what you're looking for it to do. Don't let these anons fool you into thinking you need some super operator handgun with all the bullshit, fact is you squeeze of a round or two and most nigs/crackheads are gone. Wheel gun is a fine choice.

Revolver is a good pick
Live in the area, know a guy who had to blast throw a snow glove in winter using a wheel gun

Its a good choice revolvers are practical, very simple and easy to maintain. Depends what you want to use it for, its a good choice for conceal carry which is what I assume you want it for.

If you just want something just for the range probably a larger revolver with adjustable sights would be better.

As others mentioned any good auto loader like a glock will probably be "objectively" better and cheaper. Nothing wrong with a revolver tho unless you really need the extra magazine capacity for [insert larp fantasy here].
