Airframe fatigue and deferred maintenance is now affecting even the Tu-160s.
>During the large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine on the night of September 2–3, three Russian strategic bombers reportedly failed to launch their missiles due to technical problems.
>According to Militarnyi, citing the Telegram channel Dossier Spy, the Tu-160 bomber Ivan Yarygin (tail number 04) could not fire its missiles because of a malfunction in the launch mechanism. Another Tu-160, Alexey Plokhov (tail number 16), was struck by lightning during the mission, damaging the cockpit glazing and forcing the crew to abort the flight and return to base.
>A third aircraft, of an unspecified type, reportedly failed to take off from Engels Airbase. The cause of the malfunction remains unknown.
>The failure of two bombers has been interpreted as a possible sign of the Russian defense industry’s difficulties in properly maintaining its strategic fleet. Analysts also suggest that intensive use and the exhaustion of critical components may contribute to such malfunctions.

>waaaah but /k/ is a military board
shouldn't have brought up KSP then dipshit.

even then, i'll answer the question of why anyone would use a liquid 1st or later stage on an ICBM
1st stage is something you do when you're the USSR during the cold war or a fledgeling shithole dictatorship trying to build threatening missiles, your solid rocket motor chemistry is too shitty and liquid is the only thing available to you with enough ISP to give you the needed range.
in the case of 2nd or 3rd stages, it tends to be because of the better throttleability and higher precision you can generally achieve, especially with smaller liquid fueled rocket engines.

Looks like it has been a bad week for BUK with losing a couple of them which causes problems for their air dominance. Overall their optempo seems unrealistic in the long run
