One of the key problems with Islam is that polygamy results in excess males who are unable to find wives. This is part of why Muslims have been so violent historically, war both gets rid of some excess males and can provide wives for the others by way of acquiring war brides. Of course, this doesn’t really gel with the 21st century. Much ink is spilled about the plight of the western nerd-Incel archetype but it’s unironically way worse if you’re a below average guy in a Muslim country. The suicide bombings and other acts of wasteful ‘martyrdom’ start to make more sense with this in mind

They're willing to let some shmucks die because they think they're getting the best possible trade by being able to at least contest influence in the region. If they do nothing than they will fade out even faster. Obviously this isn't very productive or sustainable but it's the best choice for them in their eyes, also at least a few positions will be able to be built and hidden eventually
