Are mechs a good idea if they could dodge out of the way of incoming fire?

What if they receive rifle fire and are instantly detonated from engine crits through armor?

If they could stand above the treeline and then dodge back underneath it they would be really useful on the modern battlefield.

Small arms really wouldn't be a problem.

if it can dodge a bullet or any chemically fired ballistic projectile, there is no pilot. liquid breathing pods would be needed to get you even close to anything human piloted, and at that point we're going to be scooping out most of what makes you human before slotting you in because it'll make it easier anyways.

just go to >>>/m/ already, you'll like it there more.

Battletech mechs exist because of an extremely efficient fictional material advancement that mimics muscle, and therefore is perfect for bipedal machines while not particularly useful for conventional tanks. It allows mechs to mount disgustingly high amounts of firepower with comparatively little weight and infrastructure. You could mount four M1 Abrams main guns on a mech that's the same weight as an Abrams, significantly faster, and genuinely all-terrain.

It's not particularly realistic, but it's the excuse given, and more than most series give.

Doesn't work. Myomer is basically artificial muscle that expands and contracts based on electrical impulses that need fission engines to power, while creating a fucking ridiculous amount of heat in the process. Trying to fit it into a compact space with no ability to sink its heat into atmosphere through long limbs just causes a meltdown.

Tanks use conventional internal combustion engines that have no such heat issues. So while they can't mount as many guns, they can be better armored and not care about the heat sinking capacity of the environment they're in. They're also considerably cheaper.

Everything you said is wrong except that battletech doesn't have myomer in vehicles, there are fusion engine tanks.
There is no reason given for why myomer can't turn a crank shaft, it is simply ignored.

No, not unless it is the smallest 'mech' possible.

Something like the suits from Avatar (with better pilot protection) would work for specific situations but anything bigger would be idiotic, useless and just flat out not work. The ones they used in Avatar or the loader from Alien is about as big as you could get without it being a liability not to mention anything bigger simply will not be feasible.

You might be able to go *slightly* larger with a non humanoid design.

Addendum: A piloted version of the ED-209 would work, it has huge feet.

For some reason i'm reminded at how for a brief period Battletech 35 or so years ago had a cost based system for choosing your force while at the same time coming out with rules for infantry, any sort of conventional unit you wanted, drop ships, naval vessels, even Veritech fighters. This was right around when they came out with the Clans.

I lost interest after my first half dozen games where i just spammed realistic numbers of jump infantry, tanks with long toms and LRM equipped jeeps. Everyone got sick of playing against me and it was boring, it wasn't that i would always win it was that it was annoying and unfair to my opponents for them to move 4-5 mechs while i moved around 100+ units.

The worst part was the way the rules worked the best way to fight me was to use a Catapult to kill the infantry and light armor but it took so fucking long to do the dice rolling we would just give up.

Battletech combined arms is cool but like you said, it literally doesn't function with the shitty rules as written. You *must* play through something like megamek or the HBS battletech mod Roguetech in order to digitize the enormous amount of crunch.
