Nobody is buying a 10mm pistol to shoot 40SW equivalent loads. People want the original specifications of 180 grain bullet at 1300+ fps, there's no other reason to buy the gun. And yet to this day most manufacturers are still putting out watered down ammo with FBI era specs and you still have to specially order ammo from Underwood or Buffalo Bore to get "real" 10mm ammo. Why can't the ammo companies read the fucking room?

The answer is because 99% of people will never shoot a living thing, or even ballistics gel, with a pistol. So recoil is all that matters for most ammunition manufacturers. Stopping power doesn't matter against paper

Roll your own. It's what I do with .40 S&W to push 180gr to 1150fps with that caliber, and 255gr at 1300fps with .45 super. If I had a 10mm, I think I wpuld try for 1600fps with 180gr bullet. VV makes some really good pistol powders for chasing fps without excessive pressure spikes.

Most people who buy 10mm just want it for the larp. It's a lot easier on the wrists to shoot FBI loads and tell everyone about how incredibly powerful it is than to actually shoot Buffalo Bore.

The real reason is that no one actually wants “real” 10mm save maybe 5% of 10mm shooters. I am perfectly fine with 180 gr @1150-1200fps as the “standard” 10mm load. No reason to push faster than that.

Underwood 180gr range packs
Magtech 180gr fmj
I stock up on Underwood during sales, I have no use for soft 10mm.

You actually don't. You think you do, but the truth is that high pressure supersonic loud and concussive expensive meme round handgun shooting isn't fun.
This is why 10mm Auto is a meme. Actual handgun hunters will just grab a Contender or an Encore pistol in a superior chambering, or a big revolver. People who want a "big gun" to plink with are just going to get a .45.

I want a "fullsize" (4.5 to 5 inch barrel) 10mm as a holster carry not for people, but for when I am hiking and have the possibility of a pissed off big american cat or a bear.
9mm is fine against anything else. I would do magnum revolvers for my wanted purpose, but at that level of handling required I'd rather have 12+1 of sooper special 10mm than just 6 of a .44

Most of the ammo is fine performance-wise (reliability-wise I'm not too big a fan of SIG or Winchester, but experiences may vary).

Correction you need a long barrel. Blaster cartridges suck in subcompacts. A Glock 20 would give your 10mm pretty good performance, and a Glock 40 would give it great performance. However, a Glock 29 just underperforms; at this point you might as well downgrade to .40 cal or .357 SIG.

Newsflash: most .40 s&w ammo is also dreadfully underloaded to appease 9mmlets. Somehow they shoot anemic .40 target ammo and complain about how snappy it is, i would be curious to see them load some buffalo bore or handloads loaded right near SAAMI max. 10mm you have to dole out a premium for the real ammo, or get into handloading

You could get a G29, buy a threaded barrel from KKM for a better supported chamber and .75" extra length, and get G20 performance out of it as well as reasonable suppressor potential if you're using ultra heavy projos and keeping velocity down.

180gr at 1600fps sounds kind of crazy unless you're talking about a 10 inch barrel. I'm at ~1350-80 fps with 10 grains of longshot out of a 5in barrel and that is very much over pressure and sketchy.

I am aware that 10mm out of a short barrel is still better than .40 out of a short barrel. It's the same with .357 magnum and .38 SPL, even in a snubnose, the .357 will do better. However, if you are going to pay for more expensive 10mm ammo, you should get your money's worth. Shooting 10mm out of a subcompact is like putting premium gas in an economy car; the fact is that it could have served you better elsewhere.
