I ate an MRE for the first time. Pic relaetd, menu 19, first inspection date november 2027
It was legit inedible. I did go beyond a little bite, it was cat food tier. The "bread" is more like a dry barley powder held together by magic. The gratin was even worse.
The FRH also barely worked at all, not getting hotter than if I had been sitting on it for 15 minutes.

Most Americans are used to a steady diet of shit-tier food as cooking skills were lost generations ago. MREs are on par with fast-food slop & microwave meals.

I agree expecting quality out of anything shelf-stable like a combat ration is absurd. However there's an awful lot of shit food being served for no reason other than incompetence and laziness. But hey, grandma really wanted to watch TV instead of teaching her kids to cook, so here we are.

They don't. MRE's are meant to be a short-term solution to feeding men on the field where they don't have reliable ways to feed them with other means.
It is ALWAYS preferrable to feed the men in military mess halls with actual food cooked from fresh ingredient by profes... by skil... by military cooks.

There are loads of horror stories on how prolonged periods of eating nothing but MRE's will cause horrible constipation. They are just that: a shelf-stable, easy to carry food meant to give you enough calories to last up to a week or two "out there". Being delicious was never a high priority but more of a bonus, if you manage to find an actually decent MRE.

>There are loads of horror stories on how prolonged periods of eating nothing but MRE's will cause horrible constipation.
Scientist who used to do research adjacent to the MRE program here. We would constantly hear two totally different urban legends about MREs. One was that they contained ""anti-laxatives"" specifically designed to cause constipation so that soldiers wouldn't shit themselves. The other was that they contained laxatives so you wouldn't get constipated. Frequently the gum or the candy was said to contain the laxatives. Neither story is true.

The other odd thing was what people seemed to think that MREs were some absurd number of calories, like 3000 or more. That is complete bullshit. the calories vary by menu but they're about 1300 on average, and this is no mystery as the nutrition information is printed right on the package.

okay retard

I suspect the FRH was bad then. I read the packaging like 5 more times afterwards and I'm sure I did follow the instructions correctly. I've been reading there are some ways to activate the FRH better though, by adding a little bit of salt and massaging the package when you add the water. However, there was not a single part of the meal that felt even close to acceptable food quality. I had the MRE mayo separately with my real food and even that had a disgusting chemical after taste that continued to linger for hours after

You don't have to use an FRH. If you have access to a vehicle engine or hot water, you can heat the pouches up that way. Also soldiers don't eat them everyday, only in the field or missions. You don't eat MREs for pleasure, your eat them because you have to. People who can't stomach MREs (there are plenty of them even in the military) usually just bring a shitload of snacks to the field when they go.

Speaking of constipation, hwy haven't the yankees solved that already? It's about having enough fiber in them, isn't it? Just add some proper high-fiber crisp bread or something into them instead of those bland-ass crackers.

This crisp bread stuff might not be as tasty (It's a bit of an acquired taste) but since when did military care about that? Calorie-dense, too. Having good, healthy shits out there in the field is worth it.

>It's about having enough fiber in them, isn't it?
No, there is fiber in MREs. It's just the usual thing when people suddenly switch their diet and eat something different they're not used to they can very easily get either constipated, or the shits, which explains the two memes >>64225286 describes.

>but since when did military care about that?
They care a lot about it actually, at least the US does. The reason is that they want the soldiers to consume a certain number of calories & proper nutrition otherwise they can't do their jobs properly, and if the food doesn't taste good then people won't eat it. That's why there is a focus on including name-brand things, like say M&Ms candy, because they know those are things the soldiers will eat and therefore get calories in their belly.

If I recall, even in Joe Kassabian's memoir of Aghanistan they only ate individual MREs sometimes, and their FOB was extremely basic.

Unitized Group Rations, rations made to be prepared in field kitchens for groups rather than individually, are more like dining hall food.

Hard to imagine US troops primarily relying on MREs except in the most extreme situations or in training exercises.

Wright's book about his time embedded with the Marines during the 2000's invasion of Iraq had them eating MREs quite a bit, but that was an extremely mobile unit fighting in a break-neck pace campaign where the defense lines were rapidly receding. They were also consuming huge amounts of Rip It caffeine drinks, driving for extended periods of time, and eating within their convoy vehicles.

>>64225286

> 1,300 calories per meal is quite a bit and the 3000 number you're recalling is if you're eating an MRE for every meal.

3 a day is indeed intended to pack the calories in, as the estimate is that intense combat can result in the typical soldier exerting some 4,000+ calories. Without a high calorie diet, soldier fitness and effectiveness quickly deteriorates in combat situations.

Then if you poke around you can probably find some more cost effective mres from european countries, french and italian ones are supposed to be pretty good. If you just wanted the experience of a us mre, imagine you got the equivalent of a can of ravioli and some jerky with the rest of the stuff you got and that would be a fairer representation. The heaters are hit or miss and tend to take longer than people expect to heat up. Mres main objectives are to be healthyish food that can last years at room temperature storage and still be edible with no prep. They aren't going to be as good as a fresh home cooked meal, but I've had ten year old ones that still tasted good, the variety is fun and the convenience can't be beat.

It's not a fiber thing, there's enough fiber in them.
It's a hydration thing. Many of the MRE components are partially or fully dehydrated for preservation.
You rehydrate them during prep, but often it's not enough, and depending on climate you're probably not drinking water as much as your body needs to at the same time, so you're becoming dehydrated even without consumption of a dried out food item.

Since they dropped to less than 40/case I've been living on them since July and OP is a faggot. If you can, heat the pouches in hot water and if you can't you have to be careful to put exactly the right amount of water in the FRH. You still need to knead the package as it's heating and sometimes flip it around to get it evenly warm. The FRH is dick and only useful if you have no other options. I boil water at home and dump it in a pot with the mains and wait a bit which makes it piping hot. Some of the mains suck but the variety of shit they put in for sides makes up for that. I eat the boring bland mains when I just need food at work and I enjoy the gems like chili Mac with a good movie on the weekends. The boring mains usually have good sides like recovery trail mix or pizza combos.

It's no Jersey Mike's or whatever the fuck corpo slop but it's calories for cheap and it is a step up from the garbage food they serve at public schools. Plus they put extra shit like vitamin a in the peanut butter and purees so as mid as they taste they give you everything you need. Also I poop just fine, drink water you dumb cunts who complain.

I've never really had complete MREs before, just a few bits and pieces here and there.
Tons of exp. with mountain house stuff, my uncle used to buy in 10lb drums and just let us take ziplocs of whatever was nearest expiry when me and my friends were going camping.
Most of that stuff was great (he was old school USMC and said it was much better than govt issue), I imagine real-deal govt stuff isn't quite as nice to the pallet but lasts longer.
I'm trying to get a feel for which menus are the absolute worst, so I can get them out of the way first.

I think freeze fried foods are the best since if you dont have water to boil you have bigger problems than getting a warm meal. Some of the Norwegian MREs had tuna with either lime or sweet chili and to this day I still crave it.

hey i'm one of the guys that was basically living on these ever since the price of US MRE's suddenly dropped to a third of their post covid price a few months ago

i've eaten 15+ cases of A and B, i will say that i was boiling the pouches and saving the heaters though, so your experience will likely vary compared to mine if you mostly use the heaters

first thing i'd say is that case B's meal selection is far more consistent across the board, even if it doesn't have chili mac, it also doesn't have some of (what i'd consider to be) the worst selections like the two spaghetti meals (spaghetti / meatballs in tomato sauce). both of those are incredibly bland and the only meals i can't really enjoy in any capacity, there are some other ones i'd consider to be lower-tier like beef strips in barbecue sauce but they work well with their components

the mexican meals in case B are the best imo
the patty meals like the one in OP's post might seem odd but they're very flavorful and they're the most calorically dense menus in either case, cut the patty into strips and put them into the tortilla that comes with them instead of eating them straight
one patty menu doesn't come with tortillas if i remember correctly, but the replacement (au gratin potatoes if i'm remembering right?) heat well and mix decently with the patty

always heat the sides and cheese packets (the cheese seperates a bit in the packet but it helps it spread more)

both pizza menus (one in each case type) are pretty low on calories / substance so i'd say to eat them along with another menu item since they're pretty small portions, they also likely don't heat well from an FRH (just guessing) but they're decent, eating the pizza entree with another menu item lets you add a sauce or topping onto them which helps counteract that they're somewhat dry (they're pretty decent though, things considered)

MREs by definition have to essentially be the equivalent of the cheapest off-brand dollar store food items, and then chemically engineered to self preserve for a minimum time.
If you actually expected or expect true combat rations to be "good" compared to something else you had a mistaken frame of mind.

They are technically sophisticated and have an unusual amount of snacks. They also have an unusual amount of different meals and are packaged per meal rather than per day.

They're bland even by the standard of shelf stable food though.

French and Italian are great, Brit aren't bad. Some of the Polish ones are good. Really depends on what you consider that good food should taste like. If that's gatoraid,M&Ms and the blandest mexican food imaginable then US rations have you covered. If you like pate and rich chocolate then go French. If you like cabbage and black tea with everything then go with any of the ex-soviet countries.

US field rations ARE the best, hands-down - at being field rations. It doesn't matter if you go swimming with them, or hike in the desert with them or drop them from a plane or leave them outside in the arctic circle - they will still be sealed, edible and nutritious. About the only thing you can do to fuck up an MRE is to try to use the FRH when everything in the bag is literally frozen solid.

As far as the actual quality of the food goes, I've heard that the French beat everyone but with the Italians not far behind.

G.I.s are a bunch of crybabies when it comes to food but having done base housing inspections I've seen how many live and it's not impressive. They just crave things to whinge about.

If you want gourmet food stay the fuck out of the armed forces, problem solved. Then you can prepare all the exquisite delicacies your cunt requires.

Back when MREs were first introduced, there were only 12 varieties: Pork Pattie, Ham & Chicken Loaf, Frankfurters, and Ham Slice. There was also some Omelet with Ham in the very newest boxes.

4 of them contained some kind of pork/pig main.

Saddam invaded Kuwait in 1990. Saudis thought they were next, and screamed for Uncle Sam's help.

We told them "Okay, we're coming, but get YOUR guys out in the field in case he heads straight south."

They did, but their army/National Guard is not set up for field duty. They had no large stock of field rations. We said, no problem, we have huge dumps of the things in Europe, we'll send you a million or so. So they sent a million MREs on a ship.

Problem: Muslims can't eat Mr. Pig

So the Saudis got some of their slaves - sorry, guest workers - to start pulling the MRE boxes apart and pulling 25% of the rations out.

82nd Airborne Division was the first large American formation to arrive in-country. Field kitchens lagged behind. Somebody asked "What are we going to feed them?"

Somebody else remembered the quarter-million MREs the Saudi rejected.

So American paratroopers living in shitty camps in the middle of the desert heat spent months eating & shitting just 4-5 varieties of MRE, all pork

This was known as the "Great Pork Disaster of '90". No wonder they were so ready to rip up the Iraqis for putting them through that, when Desert Storm kicked off!

This also directly lead to:
-The ongoing quest for more variety of menu in MRE

-MREs that were vegetarian, and specialized "Humanitarian" MREs that were orientated towards those with religious taboos against certain kinds of meats, primarily Muslims.

>Hard to imagine US troops primarily relying on MREs except in the most extreme situations or in training exercises.

It's easy to do which I and tens of thousands of others did without fuss. I don't get why flavor is a matter of passion.

Eating in the field is utilitarian. Food goes in, turds come out, repeat as necessary. MREs are more convenient than (for example) driving to the DFAC and back from the flightline. We kept cases in our step vans and trucks until someone bitched about the expense (with DFAC available USAF unit funding had to pay for MREs like other supplies).

Avoiding DFAC avoids their mistakes. One TCN fucked up and filled our DFAC koolaid machine using non-potable water with predictable results. My tent city in Al Dhafra got food poisoning so bad victims shat themselves spontaneously. Sufferers would sprint towards the latrine tents then abruptly slow down, desperately clunching their butt cheeks to no avail. Chocolate chip camo hides watery sharts passably but the walk of shame was obvious.

Latrine tents were so drenched in liquid shit (floors, toilet seats, the works) Civil Engineering bulldozed them into a pit rather than trying to clean them. MRE peanut butter is a reliable turd densifier but food poisoning gives zero fucks.

Eating MREs and drinking only bottled water or soda is why I never had aerosol shits.

BTW water bottles make excellent night time piss jugs but the trash detail TCNs took exception to hauling trash cans full of aged G.I. urine in the Saudi sun.

That's the D-ration from WW2. It was the emergency chocolate bar meant for that desperate moment when you have no other food left.

Military specifically requested from the company that made the bars that "It should be about as palatable as a cooked potato" so that the troops would not eat it until they really needed it. It still had the calories of a chocolate, just not the good taste.

Modern MRE's have chocolate that is actually tasty.

Uplifting and pleasant things are not necessary but optional. That reality is also not uplifting or pleasant, but adults need not care about those trifles.

Shitting is quite central to military life hence G.I. fascination with defecation. Too dry and nuggets ensue, too wet and areosol ensues. (mixed payloads are not unknown as they can stack up). Odor varies by meal and when hatching a jack shack the garden of olfactory delights may include Ruck March Ass or equivalent pong which wafts upward from ones nether bits fermenting from tinea curis and heat rash. Local fauna may attempt to make frens but green shampoo gets rid of them. Severely matted anal thatch can be pulled free like little mutant poop crustacea rather than trying to dissolve and wash off hardened nodes.

If you get body lice and want them gone without sick call, pet flea and tick shampoo is strong and buying it doesn't make the cashier give you the hairy eyeball.

…one of my first field ops, as a Junior Enlisted Warrior one of the AAV mechs taught me to save the hot water bag and two heaters. You can then throw a crush up bag of ramen in there and get the water near boiling so it cooks pretty well, even Shin packs. To do this you had to perfect the art of activating the heater. It is a secret passed down from Corporal to Lance Corporal.
Other highlights of MRE cooking:
>save the lemon-lime drink powder and combine it with vanilla pudding to make a lemon meringue filling
>the chocolate protein powder with water filled to about half way combine with one crushed cracker and M&Ms sprinkled in, shaken thoroughly to create a nice batter, then thrown in-between two heaters can create a brownie
>Mexican chicken stew main meal can be heated up with the cheese sauce to make it easier to stir in. Add the chili flakes and dip you crackers in it to save the spoon for the 240 blank trick
If you get the Chili with Beans menu the cornbread is really good inside of it. The old Beef Taco menu was also really good, as well as the Chicken Noodle Soup being a very safe bet.

A “pepperoni sandwich” is literally a Slim Jim backed in to a roll. They do have some really good snacks, but the main meals are atrocious. I fucking love the nuts they slide in these things.
They're great, I'd buy the little packs of them on their own if I found them somewhere at a reasonable price

I don't know anon, current menu 19 is the only one that gave me severe stomach cramps.
I think OP is being a bit dramatic, I ate it and it was fine, but there were issues and concerns later.
Also had the most vivid, strange nightmares I've had since I was 8. Like wake up sweating and screaming bad.

MRE's of any kind are extremely expensive outside USA, so expensive you don't even want to try them in the first place.

MREs suck and it's silly to seek them out on any civilian situation. A pack of poptarts, beef sticks, and drink powder of choice is way better tasting and probably cheaper.

With that said MREs are fucking cool and 80 percent of anything I do is for the larp

pop tarts are massively inferior to the various MRE cakes (pound cake, turnover, muffin top, whatever)
cheap beef sticks also suck and I would sooner have spam or pouches of chicken or tuna

Costco beef sticks are good bro, also I'd grab a bag of swedish fish or peach rings before I grabbed pop tarts. Was just using it as an example

i've had it. The patty's texture is a little off-putting but I just break it up with the spoon and put it on the tortillas with the cheese spread. I find it more edible than shredded beef in BBQ sauce #02. that shit is literally just beef slop drenched in BBQ. Its the only one that I haven't actually been able to finish the entire entree, but I ate everything else.
the maple patty one has similar issues to the jalapeno patty but that one comes with pepper and onion hashbrowns and I just mix those two together in the same pouch and its good.

That's exactly what's in some mres, if you get them surplus at a good price they're cheaper than at a store assuming you like most of what's in the case and aren't just buying them for the poptarts and jerky.
A good bit of the extras are snacks you'd find at a gas station, combos, snyders onion mustard pretzels, that kind of stuff.

Standard mil mres come with chocolate chip poptarts, fema ones have a commercial pack of brown sugar cinnamon poptarts vacuum sealed in a brown wrapper in every meal, hdrs have unfrosted strawberry ones in every meal.

A bunch of people hype up the pizza slice but I thought it was kind of meh. The chicken burrito bowl, goulash, any of the rice dishes honestly are the peak IMO. The only MRE I don't like is the chicken chunks one.

pizza slice is interesting that they were able to actually do it and I think it could be some needed variety, but ive found both the pizza menus to just be OK. they naturally somewhat dry by necessity so nothing stays on it when you unpack it. the packaging it comes in is also very difficult to work with the heater too.

Chicken chunks are great with sauce, teriyaki, bbq, tabasco, cayenne, mayo if you want to make chicken salad.

They might taste better but they are not cheaper. An MRE isn't just food and if I have to type this again I'm going to scream. An MRE is a luxury meal package. It has utensils, appetizers, dessert, both hot and cold drinks (with one being coffee based), a snack course, and a meal. It also comes with condiments, napkins and no fire chem heater at a unit cost of about $7-8/MRE on the open market (gov probably pays a quarter of that per unit). There is no civilian option that can do this as cheap. You can mix and match and create a civvy MRE (complete with less shelf stable luxury items), but this raises cost and likelihood of spoilage. MREs are not the one size fit all solution for I'm hungry, they are a luxury travel meal made for grunts so you can fast deploy them and feed them. Private citizen meals still use fire, no military does that anymore by default because it lead to countless fire accidents and injuries. The chem heater conversely works at any altitude or temp and can be used in a variety of applications

Whoa buddy, are you ok? Do you have brain damage? I never said they would be banned or whatever, as a matter of fact since they are tax payer property they should be given back to us for free if they are unused.

I'm just saying they taste bad, though as I said a few times. I'm still very nostalgic for them as they remind me of my childhood when we used to get them cheap from the army nazy store and go camping and larp in the woods with our 22s pretending we were in Vietnam

Last time I looked up the cost from the Defense Logistics Agency, the government is paying $196.xx per case, so basically $16.50 per meal. Government wastes money and pays more, they don't get it cheaper. They have $700 rolly chairs in most government offices.
