I still maintain his plan this entire time is to push Ukraine back to the river. It creates a definitive boundary between NATO and Russia, gives him most of the land that is majority Russian anyway or has close Russian ties, gives him distinct control over Crimea for the future, and also gives him an idea of what NATO is capable of doing in terms of wartime manufacturing.
