Is a classic M4 still relevant? Is a free float handguard or mid length gas system really a major improvement?

Not major, but they're nice

Killing your enemy in direct combat is the most effective way to conquer their cities and lanes of commerce.

Our current technology is mostly limited to throwing metal at your enemy very, very fast for 90% of engagements.

An m4 rifle throws metal very, very fast at your enemy. It does this essentially as effectively as other, similar tools.

Yes, it is still relevant.

>Is a free float handguard
Yea, particularly in the case of of things like your picrel, you want an IR laser to hold zero
>Mid length gas
Not really, going from carbine to rifle on something like an SPR can be meaningful though

I think the block 1 M4 is pure sexo
having said that I've thought of doing a block 2 build except midlength gas
does anyone have both a midlength 14.5" and a (properly ported 0.0625" gas port) carbine gas 14.5"? how do they compare in terms of brapping in your face?

>Is a classic M4 still relevant?
yeah
>Is a free float handguard or mid length gas system really a major improvement?
I can't speak for the gas system, but a free float handguard had a small but noticeable effect, namely the complete lack of point of impact shift depending on how you hold it.

They're kino but mid length gas makes ARs way nicer to shoot. If you want to free float it get a daniel defense omega rail, it's drop in so you don't have to cut the delta ring off

Yeah, its fine. The people who push their guns to the point where they would benefit from free floating, already have them. IMO service rifle MOA has become a very "civilian" thing (for want of a better word) to fixate on. Like for an isolated SOF or recon unit where an engagement may legitimately be decided by 4 guys with just their carbines, it may be relevant; but everybody else in the military is dealing with distant targets using M240s, MAAWS and a mortar platoon. Mid length is a categorical upgrade, but again, not really worth the squeeze for most people.

Yes it's still one of if not the best fighting rifle in the world rn. The thing is with free float and midlength gas is that they are nice to have, but aren't good enough to justify upgrading from the M4A1 if that's already what you have. If you are just adopting the AR, then ya you can go ahead and do those "upgrades," but if you've already been running M4s it doesn't matter and you should keep what you got. In general even for your average joe, free floating and midlength gas don't even matter that much, even less so for a giant military

Anyways M4A1 is GOATed and will be used on Mars

I really like the omega rail but sadly the one I had ate the teeth off of my Delta ring. It didn't impair any performance at the time but I was worried that under abuse the rail would eventually break off or something more dramatic. Can't say I recommend them or recommend against them but I will say be careful if you have one anon

you're always better off having it than not having it.... but war is expensive and there are far more important investments, like logistics, artillery, industrial capacity, etc.

I was just looking it up.
It free floats off the D-ring barrel nut.
Was looking it up myself, the carbine gas is only 7" long though wich is kinda pathetic tbqh.

I honestly have yet to see anything better to fill its role. Im not sure why they didn't just switch from 5.56 to 6.8spc and call it a day.

How do you mean? That's normal, standard length for carbine gas with an fsb.

Free float is honestly less important to me than simply a longer handguard. I don't think most people realize the m4 handguard is shorter than a mk18 handguard. 7in inches is really not ideal when you have to slap a LAM on it. 9-11in would really be the sweet spot. A decent two stage trigger and 11in free floated rail would solve most of my grievances. Forgive the airslop pic.

You could trim along the edges with barrel profile caliber operating system, metallurgy but the M4 is peak shooty.

I don't know for sure if the 14.5 carbine has a proper gas port size, it is a Colt barrel. That being said, the midlength gas is more comfortable to shoot. Recoil is better (carbine buffer on both) and gas is a little less. Midlength has a Radian Raptor charging handle, carbine is Mil-spec.

I have restless AR syndrome so I was uninstalling it one day. I think this may be an attributing factor to why the teeth broke, as installing it and uninstalling it more than once can maybe cause an issue. Regardless, it's still a concerning problem and worth keeping and eye on just in case it happens to you. I can't remember but you may be fine just pulling the D ring back and looking at the barrel nut teeth every now and then and seeing if they are all still intact around the screws that hold the rail in place. Worth a little paranoia imo
