Its a product of the Spanish Hapsburg's and exists as its own separate entity because its Catholic while the rest of the low countries are largely Protestant. It has almost nothing to do with the Germans.

Another issue is Belgium's strategic and fortunate economical position throughout European history, which caused a lot of happy looting, glorious war and centuries of oppression. Belgians aren't particularly fond of (foreign) authority.

It was a Catholic part of the Netherlands which at the time was trying to suppress Catholicism, which is why it's a weird mix of Frogs and Clogs. Flemish are Catholic Dutch and Walloons are basically another type of French. They had a bloodless revolt and claimed independence in like 1830, and the Dutch appealed to the UK, France and Germany to not recognize Belgian's independence (because UK was battling Irish independence, Germany with the Poles, France with its regions etc) and they all said "fuck you this is a real country now, get rekt faggot"
as a side-note, Wallonia used to be the armoury of Europe.
Before the FN, wallonia invented the Mosin-Nagant, the first Machine Gun (the Montigny gun), and even before the Mons Meg (the medieval canon, mostly used in Scotland) , and basically build the artillery of the Spanish Empire (through Jean Curtius).

there was quite a bit of fighting in 1830
including a lot of Flemings that volunteered for the Dutch army (the Dutch king being more popular in Flanders then the Netherlands certainly didn't hurt).
But the French intervened and stopped the reconquest with the approval of the bongs.

The general trend was that below the Rhine delta was majority Catholic, and above was Protestant (though nowadays the Catholics are the biggest Christian group in the Netherlands in general).
