A good pattern uses macro patterns to disrupt the distinctive human silhouette that us humans have evolved to recognize. The same applies for face paint, by breaking up the very distinctive human face with a pattern, concealing yourself from passing glances or active searchers becomes significantly easier.
The concept of disrupting the overall shape of the object with a pattern to make it difficult to discern its true shape can be isolated to just that with the Dazzle pattern which was extensively used during WWI. While concealment wasn't its purpose, (concealing a giant ship in a figurative desert is impossible) it made determining the direction the ship was facing more difficult which interfered with the gunners' aim (see picrel).
Now with Dazzle showing how breaking up an object's silhouette can confuse spotters, apply that concept to uniform camouflage and with the addition of a color palette for complex environments and you theoretically have a pattern that breaks up your vehicles, equipment and men.
>but lets be serious, no way youll notice that bipedal blob of green brown mesh moving betveen that blown up house and those trees, right? must be your eyes playing tricks or something, surely if the guy wore a leather jacket and farm pants youd spot him instantly from 200 meters, right?
In a life or death situation, you will want as many advantages as you can possibly get. If that means eschewing an OD uniform for a patterned uniform then a reasonable leader/organization will do it.
