Question for anyone who would know; I have an SKS that is slightly loose in the stock and rocks front to back. I alleviated it by shimming it with some tin foil so it's firm in the stock now. However it's a bit of a delicate fix, and if I ever want to remove the receiver from the stock again, I'd have to re-shim it with fresh foil. If possible I'd like a more permanent fix. I don't want to bed the entire stock, but is there some type of epoxy I could fill the loose space with that would conform to the shape of the stock+receiver that would stay bound to the wood, but not to the metal?

is there a list or something of all swiss straight bolt rifles and their timeline? Shits confusing they all look the same except some of them blow up with modern ammo

If it has a semi pistol grip with no splice, and a rounded stock its a 1911

My $200 Bing Chilling Tokarev just came in from PSA today.

Condition is way better than I expected given they had this batch listed as NRA Good condition and the images on the listing showed a fuckhueg importer banner marking on the side of the slide.

Looks to be in pretty much factory new condition.

The action is very tight, there's virtually no visible pitting, wear or rust anywhere I can see, the bore is immaculate and it doesn't appear to have been refinished or refurbished.

Manufacture date appears to be 1969 if the dating method for these where you add the first two digits of the serial number to 1953 is accurate.

Next order of business is to swap in one of the Polish triggers off of Apex so I can get rid of the annoying Glock-style safety one it came with.

bed it with aluminium pillars in devcon and rub a coat of renassiance wax on it so it will release or just buy another better stock for it from boyds and keep the original, they were cheap cimmie made guns for conscipts and are not a high accuracy platform. Th eprocess above is doable by anyone with case skill and attention but if it goes wrong and you fuck it up you end up with it irrevocably glued into a lump for ever. A lowwer grade fix would be to bed it wit fibre glass like acuglass (still need to wax coat it, disassemble etc). When done you then have top clean the wax off etc. Search for bedding a rifle, you will find a million guides but be fucking careful you are meticulous

in terms of surp/collectability/antiqwur simply don;t trouch it but then again it'a fucking sks and in the end of the day common as mud and always will be. Is it for shooting or collecting?

Anyone know if Rocksett would be a good solution to keep a 1917 Enfield's front sight base from wobbling side to side? I put a new Criterion barrel on mine earlier this year, and I don't know if it's the front sight key I have, or if Criterion just made the cutout for it oversized by a hair, but my front sight base has some side to side play that I'm pretty sure is affecting the accuracy a bit.

Got this stuff the other day from a gun show, can anyone tell me all its uses? I know it’s obviously used for cleaning rifle bores but can it be used like hoppes oil or ballistol? I was going to say a Reising M50, but I just checked prices and I see asking price on those is now around $10k. If they were still $6000-$8000 and held there I would maybe save extra cash for several years and buy one some day. But now I’d say a realistic purchase would be an SVT-40. I’ve bought plenty of firearms between $1500-$2000, but never anything more than that.

Having never handled a Lee Enfield I can't make the comparison. I can tell you I have a 1903 made in 1931. I enjoy the heck out of shooting it. About 2 or 2 1/2 MOA at 100 yards with bulk PPU ammo.

Get one. They're not as expensive as everyone seems to think; just have some patience and be thorough in your search. $800 will get you a good-condition WW2 refurb that should prove a good shooter.

Which model of Lee-Enfield? The accuracy standard for the M1903 was pretty good for its time. Once the sights were properly targeted a rifle had to place 5 consecutive shots within a 4.5" square at 200 yards or it required maintenance. I can't remember the exact requirements for the SMLE but they were pretty similar and both the UK and USA military establishments of the pre-WW1 era prided themselves on rifle marksmanship.

With that said, having both I prefer the sights of the 1903 over a No1 but the No4 sights are just as good. Anything after that its your own skill and the ammo that dictates the accuracy.

I always underestimated my 1903s for years and I’m done doing that. I feel they’re better than WW2 K98s, I like the bolts more, I feel like they’re smoother, and the sights are way better. I do prefer peep sights though, so I like shooting the 1903A3 more.

The Lee Enfield certainly has a smoother bolt and I like the peep sights. I think the No4 Mk1 is one of the best looking surplus rifles ever made.

It almost certainly went through the Civil War (1944-1949) if that's the case. It's also possible this was used by the Hellenic Expeditionary Force during the Korean War.

I also have to agree I prefer the used look of a gun that's been through combat. I have a Greek Mannlicher-Schoenauer Carbine that was used during WWII, and she has her own battle marks on her.

The K98 is a good rifle, but it's definitely designed for reliability in battle above most else, in the hands of the lowest common denominator infantryman and you can feel it. 1903s and Enfields have a bit more finesse and thought put into them. I wrote off the 03 for years until I ended up with an 03A4, and man, what an incredible rifle.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Mauser fanboy. I think the model 98 is the best all around military bolt action ever made. But the sights are probably my least favorite of 98 variants. They’re too blocky to bee very precise. I much prefer Swede M96 sights as far as open sights go.

I'm currently waiting to pick up 2 of these at the gun store, as they were on sale for around $250 each.

I'll forever regret not getting an SKS when they were $99, so now I'll forever have milsurp FOMO.

That's such an overrated thing that boomers, and those who LARP as boomers love to parrot. It's not like you missed out on investing in Bitcoin. I've bought 4 SKSs from 2017 to 2023, ranging from $350 - $500, and never felt like I spent too much or missed out. They're great rifles, still worth it, and still pretty damn cheap for what they are. I remember I had an original web sling that I thought would fit pic related years ago, but the damn wrist sling swivel in these carbines is so small that only special slings fit in them. Unfortunately I sold that web sling long ago, and now I have an M95 long boi, with a reproduction sling.

Damn, I guess I can always go the repro route if I have no luck finding an original for my long boi. Austro-Hungarian accessories and firearms are definitely a lot more uncommon than I originally thought they would be.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm not exactly sure what to search trying to figure this out. I bought a 410 (Indian Musket) converted MK III SMLE and found this. I don't remember the cut for the stacking swivel being omitted as something being very common. I've managed to find a few rifles like this but not many. Mine is a 1918 London Small Arms MK III, no star. Nosecap has a non-matching 5 digit serial number over a V (odd considering I think they're usually prefix letter over serial). Anyone have any info on when and why the nosecaps were missing this cut? I assume it was a wartime cost/time savings. Oddly one of the few others with this cut omitted I managed to find like this was also an LSA 410 IM converted SMLE.

That's what I assumed as it seems Ishapore made them without the cut for the swivel. Tried looking up the caps and found this https://www.enfield-rifles.com/nose-caps_topic11235.html but of course no pics and no doubt incomplete. The nosecap on my LSA is slightly different as compared to a British made nosecap; wings are either taller or shorter, I forget. Odd that it seems to have been taken off a different rifle and not just a new spare, being serialized to a different rifle. Rifle is an early 1930s RFI 410 conversion (which IIRC most of the batch this rifle came from seem to have been converted around the same year).

Could be no 4. Has ears of the same length as compared to British made, BUT the metal cap around the muzzle is ever so slightly taller and the channel at the top of the muzzle exposing the front sight block is much much shallower. I don't think it has any other markings, but then again it's rusty as hell and needs a rust conversion (boiling) when I get everything off and get a day to do so.

What's the deal with Indian used SMLEs, anyways? And by that I mean what the hell did they do to make the stocks turn fucking BLACK? Can't tell if they're just filthy or they got a ton of oil on the wood; throw some heat at the stock and liquid comes out. It's like they dipped the stocks in motor oil. It's hell to restore, I'll say that. Seems like it doesn't run that deep as I had a broken section with very nice wood tone on the split but just getting it to come up to the surface is a ton of work.

Dealt with a Remington rolling block in 7X57 that had a tar-black stock. Tool a lot of soaking with acetone to work all the shit out of it without destroying the cartouches and markings, then re-staining and oiling.

This typically comes out to ~7.5k a year if I dont buy anything. As it accumulates, my budget for something gets ever higher. Maybe theres like 4k sitting in the fund and I buy something thats 1k. No sweat cause its in the fund and then its back to numbers go up dopamine time

This only works for me cause im done buying up the general and typical stuff so I am only waiting around for rarer and cooler shit (I am the RSC 1917 anon from the past few threads). But even just having an aside that you keep for the bigger things can help. But again itll depend on your other financial needs and how much you are willing to put aside or wait around.

Any tips? I'm taking a paper towel, folding it over twice, soaking the thing in acetone, and sitting it on a spot for about 15-20 seconds. Then take an acetone soaked cottonball and swipe the paper towel over to the next spot, use the cottonball to soak that up, and move over. It's slow going and the damaged spots are the worst. I don't think I'm going to sand it as a lot of the markings are super faint but I do want to try and make the figure of the wood pop. I'll try BLO first and if it doesn't work it's easy enough to remove; IIRC that stuff comes right off with a little alcohol or acetone.

I've been prioritizing debt payments first and foremost to get those behind me, then saving up for a place of my own. I do have a fund that I've been setting aside some money but since space is quite limited now, I figured I'd just go for something really nice and try to stave off the itch. It doesn't help that I still have quite a few gaps in my WWI collection but a nice semi auto would be preferable if I can only add one more.

With. Stocks can (but rarely) match the gun. A matching gun+stock will command a premium. There are a LOT of repro stocks folks will bundle with a gun but they dont usually affect the price outright.

Also Mineral Spirits may dissolve finish but I'm not sure. I know my BLO (30-some year old) says you can thin with Turpentine but not sure about Mineral Spirits and whether that will pull finish off guns. Personally I'd try baby wipes, the kind you use on your butt, as a first attempt. About as gentle and water-free as you can get.

The guys with much more pristine guns are going to cringe at my recommendations (and I'm always open to criticism if I genuinely do something retarded) but so far on my .410 IM caliber SMLE, I've been doing >>64279597. So far, it's worked rather well. If they soaked the FUCK out of the thing with oil or something like the Indians (stock is black as soot), then repeat this over several days until the wood looks light brown or even gray in spots (I think mine has stupid amounts of weathering). First time I tried oil and dirt removal on a rifle like this, I didn't go hard enough and it was still black (or a very very very dark brown) after copious amounts of cleaning and BLO. Use a hair dryer to dry the cracks of the wood where water hides if needed when you're done working for the day, especially endgrain or in the stock channel where it just won't dry. I wouldn't recommend this around any markings like S/N or the manufacturer's marks (arrow in circle with three letters) on the butt. Heat + water can swell any dents where the wood fibers haven't broken. Actually, a damp COTTON rag or scrap of cloth folded over (see: Muslin) and a clothes iron can remove dents from wood via steam. Anyways, remove the wood, remove any metal parts from the wood, scrape out the dirt of the stock using toothpicks, shaped popsicle sticks, etc. to remove the bulk of it, then do >>64279597 and repeat as necessary. You wouldn't believe it but my stock has so much oil in it, the gun actually went from gray BACK TO BLACK on a 2"x6" test spot over night. That's when I knew I needed more than acetone and cotton balls, lol. I'd recommend letting the stock set sit overnight and/or put it in a trashbag in the sun the next day even if you think you're done. The oil will keep on coming out much longer than you'd think.

Might be able to get away with a clear finish. BLO can work as well and is more-or-less traditional for rifles and easy to touch up or remove.

FUCK. How did I screw that up, lol. Anyways, also check for an "Ishi bolt" at the rear of the main part of the stock (forestock?). This is a brass screw going through the wood above the trigger and in front of the safety. This is for reinforcing the rear of the stock, which often indicates Indian usage or Indian sourced stocks. I wouldn't have mentioned it if I wasn't just watching a video where a guy got an Ethiopian SMLE which ended up having one, meaning it went from Britain to India to Ethiopia. There's also probably a rectangular piece of metal with a squared U notch reinforcing the rear against the receiver. Take the forestock off FIRST and ONLY then should you remove the buttstock as the bolt is squared on the end and locks into the forestock. Harbor Freight has a long flathead that fits most gunstocks; it's paired with a huge philips (SKU 65772, Pittsburgh Demolition Screwdriver Set). So taking it apart goes:
>remove rear upper handguard (careful, fingers going around the rear sight are delicate!)
>remove barrel band
>remove front upper handguard (careful, fingers going around the rear sight are delicate!)
>remove screws on nosecap
>remove screws under stock (except the one under the rear sight protector wings, not required)
>remove trigger guard screws
>remove trigger guard
>remove forestock
>open butt door (use a small flathead if stuck and be careful)
>remove stock screw (be sure to remove forestock before this!)
>remove stock

Not sure how well this really fits his theory but I have a late WWI British made SMLE converted to .410 in 1931 with no Ishy screw. Actually I think most of the ones sold through Centerfire are like that.

No problem. Just make sure you read the /K/ projects thread post (>>64279597) as that's what I just figured out today. So far it's been working way better than anything else I've ever seen and faster, not to mention without damaging the stamps or using anything acidic/basic that will damage the wood. And be sure to disassemble in the correct order. If someone fucked up in the past, you'll have to take the metal piece that reinforces the forestock (pic) out and use a vise to very very carefully close the slot and un-bend it, then probably repair the stock with acraglas. Might want to use a small amount to keep that reinforcement in there. Can't say for sure; the SMLE is finnicky in strange ways when it comes to accuracy and I don't want to recommend something that does funny things to your accuracy. I keep wanting to find that FW video where Ian shows the little bits of paper or canvas used to increase pressure at certain points of the stock in a target/sniper SMLE and can't find the video for the life of me. As for the metal, you can boil it in a large pasta pot to convert the rust back to bluing and remove a lot of the grease and dirt. #0000 steel wool and soft handheld brass brushes (large brush in HF SKU 69526) work well for removing the last of it (beware brass coated steel brushes as they scratch). I've also started to use somewhere around #00, #0, or #1 for removal of rust as it leaves way fewer strands around to clean up or rust than #0000. Homax or Hypertough (Walmart) brand, the cheap stuff. Then oil IMMEDIATELY as you just stripped off all the oil. You can also let parts get a light rust and re-boil to keep darkening it if you want to go all the way back to black rather than gray. DO NOT USE A BENCH GRINDER'S WIRE WHEEL, IT WILL EAT THE METAL (trust me, I use one to round edges on parts I make!).
