Social media is the number one source of information for the majority of people, including disseminators like journalists and influencers. But it's not just about reach. You can better tailor your message to the profiles of the intended recipients through microtargeting techniques. It is also incredibly fast and cheap through high degrees of automation.
This makes social media campaigns by far the most effective and efficient IOs when it comes to the general public.

You don't even have to create them in the first place. You can just use amplification networks to spread their genuine message. This technique is used extensively with the aim of polarizing public opinion. Just amplify the extremes and let social media algorithms do the rest.

And once you've destroyed truth all that matters is looks, face, aura, aesthetics, whatever.
Then your mindless propaganda becomes effective because people stop thinking rationally.
One example I can think of is Soviet propaganda showing *unemployed* Americans in soup lines, when *employed* Soviets would only be allowed bread after standing in line for hours, once you start thinking about it, it makes no sense.

Kirk did that kind of stuff but he was more important IMHO because he was the head of Turning Point USA. That's basically the Republican Party's college/youth organization, and they have chapters on many college campuses. There's technically the "Young Republicans" but the real money and energy for campus conservatives was behind TPUSA, so Kirk's killing hits like a more high-profile political assassination.

I try not to get invested in politics but IMO this has blown up more because he was fairly important in the Republican Party's "system" (look up AmericaFest) and TPUSA's m.o. was generating viral clips from improvised "debates" with overly-emotional college students that function more like entertainment. South Park had a great parody of this (and I think Kirk liked it too):
https://youtu.be/xlu1xTH3Iqc

The performance is improvised but it works as a template, you can do it on any college campus, and it also exploits attempted disruptions by turning them around into more content. Getting shot by a full-powered rifle cartridge is a different story though. My reaction was like "holy fuck that's a lot of blood" and then reminded of how few people are prepared for this kind of violence.

Politics can cause deaths but death doesn't care about anyone's particular politics. We also don't know why people kill public figures, but normies like predictable progression, it's why Taylor Swift is popular. Terrorism is like a sudden bang, everybody freaks out, the music stops making sense. I'd say to watch out for people trying to exploit it for their own benefit.

This. It's a form of de-politicization. In Russian domestic politics, this is done by creating a chilling effect around political participation. In American politics, this is achieved in the opposite way. You hyper-politicize an issue by creating a dream narrative about a real issue for your target group, one that validates everything they want to be true (This is called alternate reality propaganda).

They essentially gas these guys up, then point them at the other side to have a fight they know neither of them can win. By getting your national interests to be percieved as a part of the "culture war", you essentially stunlock your enemy from ever being able to act against your national interests. As mentioned by other people, reframing the issue into abstract culture war talking points reduces interest and real engagement in the real topic. And as long as you never provoke that group directly, they are removed from the equation in practical terms as well.

Unfortunately, I can't give you a satisfying answer. I've never read a counter. This whole field of study is from the Cold War, studying the Soviet Union (they were big on alt-reality propaganda, you can even see them play that trick on the older Russians with the Z shit). The field went extinct after it collapsed. They were never very agile against Soviet propaganda, they just cleaned it up with military force or building up friendly regimes, just like the British Empire did with Imperial Russia in the 19th century. All that was long before the modern information war problems we have now.

In my opinion, I just don't think that institutions like a free press and representative governments are built for international competition against countries that can control reality, especially when half the world speaks your language convincingly enough to mimic participating in your self-government. South Korea has had some success with soft power propaganda against the North, with the help of generations of crippling sanctions of course. But Korea has always been extremely provincial, and I doubt it would translate to the global situation.

Kennan seemed to believe the main counter to the Soviet challenge was internal. The answer is: fix internal problems in one's own society. Improve self-confidence, discipline, morale, and community spirit using one's own methods and conceptions. He saw communism as a malignant parasite that feeds on diseased tissue, but that the Soviets were by far the weaker force against the Western world as a whole.

I see. That does make sense considering communism specifically targeted the losers of industrialization. And was embraced as a rising alternative by the countries that never ascended under the older power structure. But I'd have to think about whether that helps our current situation at all. If all the conduits of information are telling people something, people are evolved to believe and respond to it. So I still think you'd need some kind of regimented control of information, at least in childhood, to imbue those values in the first place.

>One example I can think of is Soviet propaganda showing *unemployed* Americans in soup lines, when *employed* Soviets would only be allowed bread after standing in line for hours, once you start thinking about it, it makes no sense.
That's example of exact opposite type of propaganda.
Soviet one had a consistent and predictable message, and insistence on "we are telling you actual 100% truth".
And by the time of brezhnev it ceased to work entirely - trickle of information from the west, combined with observable reality, consistently contradicting the narrative left it no chances. That will happen if you tell the same lies in the same way while claiming it's the truth.
It tried to convince people, and failed.

The new russian propaganda innovates in that it doesn't bother itself with consistent narrative, throws concept of truth out and almost openly acknowledges that it did.
You can't just compare it to reality and expect it to collapse like soviet one.
It's made to confuse and wear out.

even today western societies are light years ahead of degenerate shit piles like russia and china. for anybody willing enough to explore what is going on inside them and how dysfunctional they truly are, despite selected tier 1 cities like muscovia or shanghai enjoying relative luxurious comfort

quality of internal life does not matter when all that matters is what is going on in the heads of its citizens. back in the olden days the capital intensity of mass media and physical limitations, like newspapers or radio/tv boradcasts, acted as its own filter. Today propaganda ministries have a hot line to every single citizen in the west

I would say only real answer is not sitting on the defensive but having aggressive counter ops. For places like china that have draconian net lock down there need to be ways of piercing into it to spread real information about things that concern them. Like CCP corruption. Plebs dont generally give a shit about ideals but they do care about personal jealousy. Like how much Xi Jinping has stolen and stashed away in off shore bank accounts. images of their personal yachts and the absurd level of luxury etc. Same goes for vatnikstan and the putin manlet or kim jong fats personal kingdom. Get under the tyrants skin by pulling out their dirty laundry in front of their serfs which weakens their authority by extention

For example see the faces of ukranians that went into yanukovich personal palace after they god rid of him with the maidan revolution and saw the pablo escobar tier hedonism on display

For this you need non fifth column governments that are willing to set up the initiative and provide the intelligence their agencies already know. Places like panama or cyprus are opaque to any private organization investigating but clear enough for tax revenue services
