Is the lack of emphasis on melee combat in our modern armed forces a weakness?

When you have a metal stick that shoots bullets in your hands, the best melee combat is shooting a bullet. Next best is poking or bashing with the metal stick. Not much emphasis needed for that.

Melee never happens on a scale that training people to fight in it would be better than more time at the range. It's not that useful on the modern battlefield where you're gonna get hit with arty before some drone drops a frag in your lap. Still, it doesn't hurt to do some training on your own / with others since it doesn't hurt to know how to stab a dude.

No, the Tau are the strongest at the tactical level in game and fluff, every soldier is a sniper and they have drones for recon and aiming assistance, their only weakness is not having enough numbers.

The main problem the Tau face is that the average space marine has the armor of a tank and the average tau has no way to handle it. They have to rely on vehicle weapons and such.

Also it needs to be said that a heavily conditioned adult male tau has the strength of an untrained human female. They are such a weak people.

Pulse rifles are stronger than bolters, and they absolutely will kill a space marine. Granted, maybe not in one hit, but they don't need buttloads of them like they would with a lasgun.

No they aren't.
Anonymous No.64257373 [Report] >>64257411
>>64257342
They literally are though, both in-game and in-lore.

Basically, here's how it goes:
>Pulse rifles have longer range and hit harder than bolters, but can't take custom ammunition and don't have as rapid a fire rate
>Pulse carbines have equal range, fire rate, and hit harder than bolters, but still can't take custom ammunition

What game? The game where you literally play as a tau has the pulse rifle weak and the bolter a mini rocket launcher. It's much stronger.
Anonymous No.64257429 [Report]
>>64257411
The tabletop game. The video game presumably just makes the pulse rifle weaker to make you feel more of a sense of progression from picking up enemy weapons since it's an FPS, but the pulse rifle is ultimately the stronger gun both on the table and in the lore.

Standard bolt rifle is strength 4 AP -1, Pulse Rifle and Pulse Carbine are both S5 though with no AP. For reference, the Heavy Bolter is also S5, albeit with 2 damage and AP -1. The Pulse Blaster, which is a standard infantry weapon, is S6 AP -1. Pulse weapons are on average stronger than their equivalents
Anonymous No.64257479 [Report] >>64257484 >>64257502

Also, the Tau Empire is starting manufacturing of the rail rifle, which is even more powerful than the pulse rifle and also armor piercing to boot.

Whether we'll ever see that change happen on the tabletop, well...

Pathfinder teams already have the rail rifle as standard issue equipment, along with the Ion rifle which is essentially just a better plasma gun. The current iteration of the rail rifle is quite heavy and not really suited as a general infantry rifle, reflected in game with the heavy keyword and worse accuracy than the pulse rifle.
Anonymous No.64257533 [Report] >>64257560

Oh yea, those boxing, jujitsu, a karate lessons and sword fighting gonna be soooo handy when you got to throw hands and swing swords at with mines, fiber guided drones, artillery shells, grenades, air dropped bombs, auto cannon and machine gun fire. The skills from those will be much less useful than the strength, endurance, and speed you would get from them.
Anonymous No.64257560 [Report]

In current rules the rail rifle is BS 5+ with the heavy keyword. I think you maybe meant the pulse rifle.

It really depends on the target. -1 AP is probably better in most cases though. Most faction's basic infantry are toughness 3, so a S4 and S5 weapon are basically equivalent against them with how the rules work.

Well comparing a Fire Warrior isn't really fare against a Space Marine. There's like, a million Space Marines, but there's trillions of Fire Warriors.

A more accurate comparison would instead be Battlesuits, since those are the elite of the Tau, and those absolutely will trash Space Marines in turn since they're basically Armored Cores.

Anonymous No.64257943 [Report] >>64257956
Also worth considering that the Tau likely have many more battlesuits than the Imperium has space marines. Your typical Hunter Cadre (think of the Tau equivalent of an Imperial Guard regiment) has around 10% of its force composed of battlesuits. Aside from the obvious benefits of integrating your elite heavy soldiers into the existing regiments instead of having them exist as a separate organization of autonomous warrior monks, there's also the fact that, to put it simply, they would have to produce a ton of battlesuits to make such a thing feasible. Which, logically, they presumably are. A battlesuit after all is just a piece of equipment that you can stuff a veteran soldier into. A Space Marine has to basically be trained from a very young age in a process that kills like 99% of the recruits that go into it for MAXIMUM GRIMDARK.
Anonymous No.64257956 [Report] >>64257978
>>64256669
Even with all their advanced technology, the Tau are still technically behind the Imperium and lack many things that Space Marines and Guardsmen take for granted.
>>64257943
This isn't remotely true. You have no idea how many Humans there are in the 40k universe and how irrelevant the Tau are in it. It is repeatedly stated that if the Imperium really wanted to, they could crush the Tau in an instant but it'd require diverting forces from a dozen other fronts and so the Imperium doesn't bother because that's how irrelevant the Tau are.
Anonymous No.64257978 [Report]
>>64257956
>It is repeatedly stated that if the Imperium really wanted to, they could crush the Tau in an instant
And this has always been Imperium cope.

The Imperium so far has wasted countless Space Marine lives, several Titan legions, and committed exterimatus on several planets using irreplaceable archeotech weaponry that they have no capacity to reproduce.

The Imperium only has a million or so Space Marines. Their Titans are even fewer. We don't even know if they have ANY other archeotech bombs like what they used to set the nebula on fire, and committing exterminatus on a planet is considered a desperate measure of last resort since you can't go and reconquer what doesn't exist anymore.

The Imperium is not treating the Tau like you would treat a minor inconvenience. They're treating them like a major threat worth dedicating considerable resources to combatting.
