I used to read websluthers and a poster there was the kid of some serial killer, and he said whenever his dad killed people, they would go innawoods for a month or two and hang out in an old cabin, wait for the heat to go down, then return, rinse repeat. Eventually they left for Belize where they lived.
What was interesting is that the dad had "apprentices" as well, he would also work with local corrupt services, like telephone guys to tap targets phones. The serial killings were in relations to home invasions, so the primary motive was stealing, but he would then rape and kill any chick he came across.
Anyway, reading that guy's stories, made me realize that it does genuinely seem to be pretty easy to get away if you are not caught immediately and they have no direct leads to you, but you kind of have to be prepared for the aftermath and go off the grid for a while. Belize seems to be where a lot of criminals and killers run off too as well when they escape.
