It's intriguing due to the shape and speculation surrounding its purpose, but the PLA's typical lack of transparency and the early stages of the program makes it hard to glean any facts. Everyone's just left to speculate at this juncture.

Is it confirmed that these are three times exactly the same engines? I heard it could be a testbed for hybrid jet where the two outer engines are conventional turbojets to get it to Mach 2 and the middle one is a ramjet to get it to Mach 3 and beyond.
