It was a story from 1-3 years ago, basically some large hardcore industrial shit from the 1930s or 1940s, probably sent via lend-lease, was still very actively used in russia and had to be sent into US for being serviced, despite the sanctions and all that. I don't remember the specific type of machine and it's almost impossible to find details since Google went to shit these days.

Cripps sold the engine in 1946 assuming both that relations wouldn't take the dive they did and that the Soviets would eventually develop jet engines anyway, you can't maintain indefinite technology export controls. He was then a wreck when the Korean War broke out. The Nene engine wasn't treated as a massive secret post-war which is ironic as the Soviets copied it down to the letter rather than reverse engineer it and then improving on the science and engineering with their own innovations.

To add to this, the Nene wasn't a cutting edge engine for the Brits at the time - it was a centrifugal type. The axial Avon was seen as the cutting edge military engine.

Because it wasn't seen as a good military engine they thought it'd be fine to sell to folks as an engine for airliners, particularly as Britain was broke as fuck from paying the US to save the free world.

What they weren't expecting was:
1. The Soviets being so shit at engine development that the Nene constituted a huge leap for them militarily
2. The Soviets being dishonest fucks who would copy it down to the millimeter and then produce it themselves rather than pay for more British built Nenes or even a license.

So it turned out to be a terrible idea, but you have to remember they were melting down their battleships and kept rationing into the 50s. They were a level of broke which the US finds it difficult to comprehend - in some ways more toxic longer term than the actual collapse suffered in much of continental Europe because at least they go to refresh their industry with foreign investment. The UK tried to carry on with old infrastructure and inefficient processes which is why their industry has faltered since.
