Regarding the bolt-action rifle we've seen on the news recently: What is the minimum amount of time required to remove the barrel of that rifle, in a manner in which it can be reassembled as it was pictured?

this is a funs question, not a political discussion

Forget time, you'd need a gunsmith with tools.

To install a barrel on a Mauser 1898 action you need to clamp the entire action into a vise grip and turn the barrel with a wrench that's like 3 feet long. If you want the rifle to actually work and not do things like lock up after firing or explode in your face, you also need to frequently stop and double/triple check headspace with a set of go/no-go gauges.

An experienced gunsmith working in a shop with all the right equipment, with everything more or less dropping into place with no adjustments required might accomplish this in about 30min but realistically we are looking at an hour or so.
A jabroni fucking around on a rooftop probably can't do it at all. If he somehow dragged a vise grip and barrel wrench up there it would probably take about the same timeframe assuming he's skipping the headspace checks.

The idea of this guy just spinning the barrel in by hand or with basic tools is not realistic with that design.

Hold the stock between your thighs?

Is it possible to remove the barrel with a spent round in the chamber? Is it possible to remove and re-install the barrel without emptying the internal magazine?

As this is a thinly veiled political thread, I'll answer your question directly.

He didn't remove the barrel, that's no guns idiocy. Replace a barrel requires a big ass wrench and vise and needs to be done precisely.

What he likely did was disassemble it by taking the action out of the stock and assemble it when he got to the roof. Or stash it days beforehand and retrieve it before the killing. Stock was in his backpack and he stuffed the barrel down his pants. Mauser 18s can be taken apart with just two screws on the bottom. https://youtu.be/5_FyWf2xJ4o?t=443

My favorite thing about [CURRENT EVENT] is that it's really proven just how little people on the Internet know about guns. The amount of stupid fucks I've seen on /k/ alone has been insane.

If you prepared beforehand, you could do it in less than 10 min. You need to prepare custom wrenches to get the big torque required.
but to fire even a single accurate shot you need proper head space and zero the scope which take time

Your theory is demonstrably false. The method of disassembly you referenced would empty the internal magazine.

Not at all what I said. Imagine your rifle has a spent round in the chamber and a full internal magazine. You then remove the action as you described. After replacing the action, you would need to reload 3 rounds and a casing in order for someone to find the rifle with 3 rounds and a casing in it, correct?

Why would it have to be loaded before and after disassembly? Just keep the rounds in your pocket and load it up before crawling out on the roof for the shot. He didn't disassemble the rifle after the shooting.

The rifle described is 42-44 inches long. You don't just stuff that in your pants. If someone who's 5'10 stood next to the rifle, the tip of the barrel would be around the middle of their rib cage. If that person limped past a Ring doorbell after jumping off a roof, the rifle would be clearly visible

The surveillance footage of him jumping off the roof appears to show the stock of the rifle shoved into a backpack with the barrel hanging out. I don't think they've said exactly where the wooded area he ditched the rifle was but from what they have said it was fairly close. They never released any other footage but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

From what I understand, he limped in with the rifle possibly separate from the stock... and again, possibly assembled the rifle on site. Then he jumped off the roof, dropped the rifle in the woods, wrapping it in a towel, and left the area. Allegedly something about a screwdriver too?

It all seems plausible

That and it's said from eyewitness accounts (notably a video of him running across the roof shot from below) that he left almost immediately after the shot was taken. He wouldn't have had time to disassemble the rifle on the roof before fleeing.

Taking a stock off takes off about a foot of the overall length, making it easier to bring in. Not talking about taking the barrel off.

I would imagine it was sporterized if it was a milsurp like mauser in 30-06
Anonymous No.64266805 >>64266813

He didn't screw the barrel on, the claim is the stock and action were separated. On pretty much any bolt action rifle that's like two screws and although you'd want to use a torque driver, a regular screwdriver will absolutely work if you only need to take one shot.

You do not need to clamp the entire action in a vise grip and you do not need a long cheater bar. You do if you are trying to pull a barrel that has been on there for 50 years while being shot by conscripts, but the one in the pic has obviously been sporterized.

Mouser actions are quite stout and you could get by fine with shoving a hefty pry bar in between the feed rails, down in the mag. You could then spin off the barrel with a wrench well shorter than the barrel, assuming it had wrench flats milled into it which I did not see evidence of. A 12" breaker bar would do fine if the barrel had been torqued on recently by anyone competent.

a 120m shot is well within the standard expectations of a U.S. army soldier. meaning that anyone can manage that kind of shot with a minimum of three weeks of practice. possibly less.
and standard U.S. army soldier qualifying is with iron sights. not a scope.
