My psychiatrist advised against me purchasing weapons. Will the fact that I'm schizophrenic show up on a background check? I've never been arrested; Only forcibly admitted to a mental hospital.

It's over for you. Your options for self-defense now are black powder guns, hunting air guns, bows, and crossbows, all of which are more expensive than firearms. Check the legality in your state before getting any of these.

Didn't want a thread to die for this noob question but I want /k/ to be real with me. In a few days I will pick up my first gun ever owned. A Ruger LCR. If I ever have to pull it out and use it, am I going to lose my perfect hearing and gain permanent tinnitus? I just can't stop worrying about it.

>am I going to lose my perfect hearing and gain permanent tinnitus?
it will definitely damage your hearing, how much and whether or not you'll get tinnitus I can't say. it's important to remember that hearing loss is cumulative as well. if it makes you feel better shooting a pistol outdoors is much better than shooting a rifle indoors

Yeah, you're not gonna be allowed to own a gun in the U.S from now on. You could own simpler antique style weapons, by that I mean cap and ball revolvers and muskets, but if your shrink advised against you possessing a weapon, probably they have a pretty good basis for that assessment.

Are you taking pills for it? Schizophrenia is pretty well treatable, as long as you stay on your prescription. Do you feel generally happy with life, also?
You could try challenging it, but I wouldn't bet on results, and your psych said that shit for a reason.

>>64276251
Blackpowder IS fun though. Just the slow and methodical loading of a musket, and the smell, it's very relaxing.

>>64276852
You might lose a bit of hearing, yes. You're probably not going to lose a dramatic amount of hearing (unless the muzzle or cylinder gap is right next to your ear or some shit), but there could certainly be some damage done.

Is it the .357 Magnum one and you're loading Magnums? That's gonna be very loud in a short barreled revolver like that, hell, it's already pretty damn loud with a full sized revolver with a 6" barrel, it's almost like a light rifle cartridge in a handgun.
Is the shot happening indoors or outdoors? There'll be a big difference between if you fire the gun in an open street or yard, where the sound gets somewhere to go, versus if you're firing it inside of your car, or in a concrete stairwell, where the sound will be much harsher on your ears regardless of caliber.

That said, potentially losing a tiny bit of your hearing in the unlikely case that you have to take a shot or two, versus getting stabbed or shot yourself (and thus probably killed), that's an easy pick for me. One time minor hearing damage MIGHT also heal a BIT after it happens, as long as you don't keep getting exposed to more in the short term, but I'm unsure of the science of that.
Anonymous No.64276978 [Report] >>64278647
>>64276878
Hearing loss is absolutely cumulative. As for tinnitus, that shit actually has a lot to do with tension in your neck muscles and shoulder muscles, thus also stress, so it's actually SOMETIMES possible to ameliorate tinnitus for some people, to a certain degree, by addressing that.

Shooting at outdoor ranges is also much safer for your hearing, yes, and outdoor shooting ranges also dramatically reduce your exposure to lead, compared to indoor ones, so it's just better for you overall.

yes, btw hearing protection only delays injury. I did not even notice when it happened to me.
gotta listen to scatter frequency noise sometimes, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQb0Ez7IYHc
wear protection but dont depend on it or use it to keep yourself in otherwise unpleasant environments.

noises less than 80 dbs still do damage to your ears it just takes a longer exposure time.
guns have a short but very loud peaky impulse, difficult to muffle.
hearing protection does not muffle all frequency's evenly, idk industry standards vary.

You can still buy guns. People don't realize that being "involuntarily committed" means ordered by a judge not necessarily just being taken to the hospital by police. It basically only applies if you took an insanity plea in court.

The people telling you that you can't buy guns don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Usually anything voluntary, for anyone at all adult or not, will not show up. Only involuntary for enough time (which in turn requires a judge getting involved). I say "usually" because gun laws in the US vary by every single state not just federal, in some states there might be some sort of red flag/mandatory reporting thing where if you literally and seriously tell a counselor "yeah imma gonna go get me a rifle and shoot up a school next week!!" or some shit they are required to report that and you can then be prevented from buying. Though usually with the red flag stuff it's all at least in theory temporary unless a process in court plays out, not for life.

Minors are then a special case on top and all their stuff is sealed unless a serious for-real crime was committed and they were tried as adults.

The goal for gun noise would be to just bring down damage to roughly "normal ageing for someone in a normal environment" level. Yes, of course we all lose hearing as we get older, that's just the baseline. As long as you aren't doing significantly worse then the baseline that's reasonable enough imo. For tens of milliseconds worth of exposure per shot added up to a few seconds worth over a few mags the NIOSH limits are pretty good science, and if you combine a suppressor with decent earpro you can bring down even a rifle to the point where you can shoot more than any normal person ever would and you're still very comfortably within long term decent exposure limits.

Fortunately starting January next year the suppressor tax bullshit goes to $0, and eforms have gotten fast and easy. I think around or after that we'll finally start to see some genuinely cheap cans in America at long last. Once you can get a gudenuf range can for $50-100 that should make it a lot easier for people to do better.

>Do you take the meds
Yes, I'm lucid, but I'm pretty miserable. Antipsychotic medication wipes out dopamine, leaving you with no motivation, fatigue, and emotional flattening. People often describe this experience as "feeling like a zombie". It also puts you at risk of developing diabetes or various cardiovascular diseases. At this point, I'm just hoping I can get to a place where I can finish my engineering degree.

>>64277056
I might try then. I don't think a judge got involved. My mom knew I was off the rails, so she called 911. Police and EMS showed up, knocked me out, I assume to do various tests to see if I was on drugs and keep me in a manageable state, and I woke up in the looney bin. I didn't go before a judge to try and get out, because I knew I'd be denied, and it would then most definitely be on my record.

Hearing damage is permanent and cumulative. You WILL be exposed to sounds loud enough to cause damage. Driving a car with the windows down is more than enough. Sounds outside the range of your hearing can still cause damage. The best you can do is wear hearing protection when you know you'll be exposed to loud noises, shooting, live music, driving, plane rides, working around power tools etc.
