>Tacitus wrote that ancient Germanics killed convicted criminals and tossed the bodies into the bogs
And performed sacrifices. We know they did. Their own tales recount it, those that survive. Numerous cultures that encountered the Norse recounted the same.
Again, this was not considered some unreasonable slander by the Romans, because literally everyone (but them, the Hebrews, and the Persians) did it. It wasn't an oddity, it was what literally every barbarian culture did.
>natural infant mortality rates made live child sacrifices too dysgenic to have become a tradition for civilizations that lasted as long as the Canaanites
Not true, because you can just make more children, what's hard is getting them to survive to adulthood, not squeezin em out and burning them up.
>only for later generations to backtrack a bit.
Later generations encountered Germanics that willingly Christianized. The Vandals and Goths were already Christian when they invaded Roman territory. In fact, in many cases they set about crucifying Roman officials in territories they conquered, for sins such as homosexuality.
