It really depends exactly where they were dug. Lots of the worst contamination was buried in pits or trenches and covered with less active soil during the cleanup. Some areas were used for decontamination of vehicles and equipment. You absolutely could cut a fighting position into an abnormally fucked up part of the zone.

Also, if you ingest radioactive material (especially alpha emitters) you can go from fine to dead in short order due to the lining of your intestines being a particularly sensitive area. This is actually what kills you first in ARS, and ingestion (not inhalation) would make that up to 20x more severe.
Remember the P210 tea assassination? That was about enough physical material to fit on the head of a pin.

That's just Ukrainian propaganda it is not possible to get any type of radiation poisoning there in the open, all the high energy particles have decayed, most of the problem now is Cesium 137 which already under went one half-life since the disaster. Only way I could see someone getting seriously sick or dying is by going inside the destroyed reactor hall or by snorting the powder left inside the Jupiter plant radiological research bunker (they have a lot of soil samples there, one is extremely hot to this day). Another similar one was about the Kursk goatse pipe soldiers dying from lung disease and allegedly Russian doctors talking about how bad it is but all they did was look at a badly angled volumetric lung reconstruction which offers zero diagnostic insight. You either attack and die in glorious battle, or you retreat and die a traitor whose family will also be denied benefits. And maybe get raped by chechens too. Except for the larger artillery shells like 155mms, a lot of shrapnel is small enough you can't see the wounds on a dust-covered body with your own eyes from 3-5m away. A cheap drone camera from 200m away won't see anything.

IMO this is one of the lesser-known reasons behind large HE payloads on Ukrainian drones. A 250g Switchblade warhead with 40g HE throwing .5g shrapnel bits will kill 3-4 men on the spot; but a 1.5kg lump of explosive and no frag when flown into someone gives injuries visible for other cheap drone cams doing BDA.

A fuzzy friend born and raised in the fires of war. Artillery firing a moment away is no bother to him. It's warmer inside the vehicle, after all, and they probably feed and pet him too.

This massive artificial hill was surrounded on 3 sides by russians who hit it with artillery, infantry, mechanized assaults, anything they could. This slag heap alone claimed dozens of armored vehicles and hundreds (or more) russian soldiers, and was a major reason why Avdiivka was so costly and difficult to take. I like this particular clip because it zooms out to show just how impossible it is to assault that hill. And this guy did better than most; usually, infantry were annihilated in the open fields surrounding it.

To fuck Ukraine over hard. The roof had multiple internal fires, and the firefighters were forced to make over two dozen holes trying to put them out. 30% of the containment structure has been compromised and the repairs will be extensive.

Complete chaos at Vuhledar on the massive assault that kicked off the long and costly russian effort to take it. In this clip, it opens with a man running around on fire, and the camera pans to a tank trying to move around other vehicles, before it strikes a land mine.

This particular assault was a masterpiece by Ukraine. This was a no-bullshit hard mechanized push by the 155th naval infantry, back when they were still well-equipped veterans. This clip is just the beginning of the chaos. Ukraine made good use of US-provided artillery-launched scattering AT mines, re-mining the entire path of retreat behind these poor fucks. Nearly every vehicle on the field that day was lost and the 155th would soon be forced to reconstitute due to manpower losses. Vuhledar would ultimately hold out as a fortress city for well over a year, despite constant russian assaults, before ultimately falling due to an inept Ukrainian general seeing their good results and deciding that they only really needed one brigade to hold it, not two brigades. Vuhledar (a critical strategic city, far more important than any other russian capture in the past 2-3 years) fell within a month of that decision.
