Will bullet counters be more common?

Bullet counter should be on the front sight post since that’s where most of your attention would be anyway. Also fuck numbers, I want like a digital fuel gauge.

I'm surprised a gun platform hasn't built in a funny mechanical and non-electronic bulletcounter yet. (correct me if I'm wrong, I know there are mag windows, but that's not the same.)
theoretically you'd only need a notched or painted metal strip that get's pushed up by a small notch that's attached to the magazine spring. The metal strip rises up either up to the left or the right the sights, or up a small slot on the side of the grip/frame that faces the user. The notches could be numbered, and the last two notches are yellow and red, to signify when you can tac-reload and when the gun is completely out when using a standard magazine. why hasn't this been done?
there's those big chunky stopwatch-esque dials, but those suck and are an attachment.

Cute, but nearly worthless.
If you're running it semi-auto, you should have a clue how many bullets are in your gun still. If it's a real problem for you, get a transparent mag and a marker. If this takes off, it'll be because of novelty.

Could easily implement a gas-gauge too. Floor plate interacts with gearing.

Well, doesn’t even need to be gearing. The floor plate could push against a wedge inside the grip, the variable pressure would drive the gauge’s line.

I agree. It’s kind of amazing no one has tried this gimmick before.

No because of light

On guns with mag capacities that makes it fairly easy to count your shots then it's nothing more than a gimmick. Large cap machine guns however may have a practical use for a counter.
Anonymous No.64283956 [Report] >>64284012
This is stupid, especially on the front sight post. Any blinky shit in your sight picture could be distracting and fuck up your aim. What would be good is transparent grips and mags so you can see how much is in there.

for real.
I mean something similar to picrel, but with a tiny metal rod/strip that just rises and becomes visible with the magazine spring rising. It would cheaper and probably have an even smaller profile than a digital display. When you take the spent magazine out gravity drops the rod back down. you could even make the counter out of a flexible metal strip similar to those tiny sewing tape measures to cut down even more on how much space it takes up because the sections of it that are past the "display" can be rolled up to save even more room.
It feels like a mandela effect that someone hasn't tried something this obvious yet.

your suggestion is better than all extant executions of a round counter, but I have something better. A spool of taut wire that connects the follower to the mag basepad. Degrees rotation of the spool = number of rounds remaining in the mag. Communicate this information to the red dot optic and display it right there next to the reticle. I’ve floated this idea before and another anon suggested that this communication could be accomplished with RFID

The failure of which would not affect the mechanical function of the gun, so the increased complexity is irrelevant.

Yes. We do need to be feeding all rifles from 60+ round quad stacks anyways, so a round counter only makes sense.

Yeah dude I totally have time to stare at the back of a fucking gun while I'm dealing with a threat.
A human mind can train to "subconciously" count shots just from association with the trigger pull. And it's EASY.

the vaporware one that got everyone's dick hard? that had no link to anything in the gun, it was just a base plate with an led display and a mic like a shot counter

>tfw rfid in every mag to make sure it can accurately count stendos
Fucking make it count up, instead of down. Reset on detection of mag release and slide rack. Stupid idea though, very impractical to implement, for a payoff that isn't very great. Just count, if you lose count just check your mag. Actually, mag windows are probably a better idea overall

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like cartridge. If you put cartridge into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put it into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, cartridge have weight. Learn what the weight of each cartridge feels like in the mag. Become the weight my friends.

No. From a doctrine standpoint, individual shooters don't matter in warfare

From a shooting standpoint, you should have a sense for how much is left in your mag

From a utilitarian standpoint, just use transparent mags.

They're still nifty, just not really mass viable.

It doesn't need to be as invasive as a smartgun, some do nothing but add a little magnet to the follower of the magazine, and then just have the counter on a little display on the side of the grip panel.
Ergo, the counter could completely fail and go dead, but it wouldn't stop anything else in the gun from working. Naturally something you should be mindful to not train yourself to depend on too much.

I wouldn't perhaps bet money on it coming soon, but I could eventually see this kind of functionality becoming simplified, economized, and hardened enough, that it would at least be viable enough for civilian use, and by that I mean for things like target shooting and hunting.

>>64283788
Mechanical round counters for magazines is something that has existed for a few weapons. It's never been really widespread, but it's a pretty old concept. One of the old Japanese light machineguns (there were two, one in 6.5mm and one in 7.7mm, forget which), had a full 30 round counter on each of its top-mounted magazine, so the gunner would actually have the count in his peripheral vision while aiming and firing, so he'd see how many rounds he had left exactly by glancing at it.

Probably the most famous example (outside of the Armat M41A from Aliens), and by far the most common. I love the Savage 99, it's such a cool rifle.

I'd say that's probably how it'll remain. They will probably become reliable enough, and become an enduring gimmick item, but never the kind which everyone is gonna have on all of their guns.
