Reloading nothing, carving my own rear upper handguard and rear half of the front handguard of a No. 1 MK III to graft to the remaining section. Was going to go with English walnut but I was going to pay about half of my rifle's value (which isn't much lol) for a small slab of it if I went that route. Used Black Walnut instead and somehow it seems it will end up being too light, go figure. I'll just have to boil some walnuts and stain the new wood to match. Actually thought I was going too dark at first.

I missed buying 91/30s when guys would bring them out for sale with all their accessories still sticky with cosmoline sitting in the summer sun. Yet not too long ago I bought a fucking Type 99 for like $120 needing somewhat minor work and I just bought a .410IM No. 1 MK III needing work (handguard, bolt, cleaning, refinish) for ~$80 that's getting a conversion to be a .410 shotgun and I'll probably be in it for less than $400 all in, including gunsmithing work. Hell of a market we have these days; I'm just very stingy about gun prices these days and I get stuff slow unfortunately, but at least I do find some good deals.
>>64354782
SKS ironically; I'm a cheap bastard and I refuse to pay retarded prices.

Their prices on M1 Garands and Carbines are crack-smoking-tier. Seriously, who the fuck buys them? Those rifles being in the "gun cave" (fancy $$$ gun room) behind glass says a lot about what they thing they can get for them.

They've sure got a funny as fuck way of doing it since they are tooling up for the first M1 grand made in the USA out of actual new production parts since the 50s.
I'll be buying one while people who don't even own garands cope about it not being a REAL historical piece all while the CMP is making history in supporting marksmanship and arguably has trained more people to shoot competently than the NRA at this point.

In today money a Type 99 like it and known duffle cut would probably be 600 on the same boomer table

Powerful cartridge + lightweight rifle + narrow buttplate = uncomfortable recoil. If the butt was flatter and wider or the rifle weighed a couple pounds more no-one would meme about 8x56R.
I want to go on a little adventure of going to local pawnshops and see if I can hit the jackpot, but I'm feeling like my expectations are too high and will end up being a waste of time just seeing cheap copy and paste ARs, has anyone found anything good at those places?

That makes sense, the narrow buttplate definitely felt like a jab with every shot. I can normally tank 8x57 in most Mausers but the recoil in the M.95 was a bit more than I was expecting. Thankfully, I didn't get a carbine in 8x56R, I think I can tame the 8x56R with some practice.

Oh yeah. Best part is Thereโs no door price at a pawn shop. Just whatever gas you burn, but it does take consistency and lots of in-and-outs to hit the jackpot. Iโve found some of my favorite funs at hockshops, including milsurp. Some Iโve seen the past 5 years:
>nuggets most common, still trying to sell them at lockdown prices unfortunately
>nice yugos
>a 96/11 I should have bought
>a wartime p38
>flawless m95 shorty
>Portuguese Luger
>Sksโs in shit chassis, easy swap back if you got wood furniture
>1903 with odd bubba threadjob and nose
>imperial mausers intact
>1917s that are always butchered, (Unbutchered burgerenfield is my pawnfind white whale)
>various bayos
Thatโs just milsurp im remembering. Thereโs cool old commercial funs that can be way more shootable. Iโm in a shit state too. Gonna be even shittier next year. Fuckin Polis

Restoration is getting there. Used a new piece of Black Walnut (American) to recreate the old front handguard's rear end. New HG piece has a tongue that goes under the old HG piece. Old HG has a little bit of the inside barrel channel carved out to accept the tongue; they will be epoxied together permanently, probably using Acraglas for the first time (god help me). Seam is just in front of the barrel band and the tongue extends about 1.5" or so. Interestingly the old HG is almost orange inside when carved into, similar to the color spar varnished oak has. The rest of the stock needs degreasing to get it to that "grey" color of the HG as well as the forestock (which needs repair as well). Previewing the color I'll get with a coat of finish on it with alcohol, it seems it'll likely all turn brown; Black Walnut repairs will need to be stained with natural walnut before being coated to colormatch. The worst part is knowing I have a rear handguard clip waiting for me to make a rear handguard for it so I have to do this all over again; IIRC this took me about two separate days working for a couple hours at a time. Luckily that piece seems a lot more decorative/protective and the barrel channel isn't as detailed or demanding in its dimensions; probably way less important for accuracy. Then I need some replacement hardware which I don't think will be too hard and a bolt (fuck!). At that point, it's up to the gunsmith to not fuck everything up when they rechamber which is a bit scary.
>Inb4 "bubba"
410 IM is a dead cartridge, this is a bottom of the barrel $80 gun that didn't sell for ~30 years after import, it has a good 2-3" of pitting in front of the chamber, and I want a fucking .410 shotgun SMLE.

Oi /k/, question time:
my k31 shoots very consistent groups when hot, like after 10-20 rounds im still in a 2 thumbs sized group at 120 yds.
my k98s stay in a tight group for like 5-6 shots but the groups get 2x bigger when hot.
not so good for competitions where 15 shots in 15 minutes are the rule, and one should stay below 2" group diameter to compete.
any other rifles known to man which do not significantly shift the point of impact when shot hot?

Universal background check states are fucking horrible for us. All the normies who find grandpa's M1 carbine in the closet sprint to collect $200 for it from a shop, only for it to be ludicrously marked up 'cause FFL's know they're the only legal option. My local area is awash in shitty AR builds and carry guns, so anything wood and steel is automatically deemed exquisitely rare. I have to make weekend trips out to "old rich folks who haven't price checked since the late 90's" territory to find any deals.

On Saturday I finally got out and tested out some reloads for my M1 Garands and they functioned perfectly. Itโs the first time Iโve been to the range in about a month. Iโm typing this from the hospital. I got my gallbladder removed and a stent put in my main bile duct almost 4 weeks ago, and Iโve had 5 ER visits and 3 hospital admissions in the past month. Iโve had 2 blood infections since all this. So they pulled the stent out earlier today and Iโm on IV antibiotics so hopefully this goddamn nightmare is over.
Anyway, I used to use IMR-4064 for my 30-06 loads, but itโs drastic price increase and availability decrease made me explore other options. >Which smelly?
No 1 MK III. Missing bolt, a screw or two, and all of the upper handguard except front half; the part in front of the rear sight is a hand made, hand fit repair I did over about two days. London Small Arms, IIRC a 1918. Converted to .410 Indian Musket in 1931, the magwell plugged with a wood block and a follower on top to act as a loading tray. Rear sight adjustment pinned in place. I'm getting it bored to .410 shotshell eventually; maybe I'll thread it and have (possibly) the only .410 SMLE threaded for chokes in the US and if not, almost certainly the only silenced 410 SMLE at least in the US if I do end up buying a 410 silencer. I don't really tend to permanently modify modify any gun made more than 20 years ago but considering they didn't sell for about 30 years after import and these are damn close to the worst examples, I'm making an exception for the barrel work so it's shootable without having to have an entire reloading setup. Stock was soaked in what I think is used motor oil considering the color it turned the wood and the smell.
>I dont lurk as often as id like.
Nah I only posted pics of this originally in the last /k/ Projects (or /k/ Create?) thread since we didn't have a /gsg/ (Gunsmithing General). First time posting this in /msg/. Unfortunately MK III parts are a little more uncommon than they were like 2-3 years ago and now it's the MK IV parts all over the place so I'm still looking. Might just say fuck it and lurk gun shows and flea markets for the parts. Can't exactly buy the parts outright even if they were cheap; I added up some costs for hunting this year and it's looking like $300 for what I "need" between tags and supplies, then possible ammo needs, then I'm thinking about putting together a new gun which comes to about $1k with possible additional costs/additions over the summer. So I'm stretching my money pretty fucking thin lol.

Its been sported, but the barrel is intact. Im missing the screw in the cocking lever, the butt is original and the forgrip. The rest of the stock, the volley sights and mag cutoff are missing.. Someday ill not be a poorfag and be able to restore it. The bayonet will be a bitch tho, i want a p.1907 sword bayo without the quillion. If your woodwork js good, consider putting the plans up for enthusiasts.

I just bought a knife bayonet I came across in person because my spike bayonet I remembered I had was for a MK IV. ...Aaaaand the knife bayonet is also for a MK IV because I'm retarded. It was $15 though and the blade is covered in cosmo.
>As I get older and my eyes fail, I turn more to optics for my funs. Gotta save my pennies and get a no drill rail for my smelly and nugget, never mind the scopes. One for my new Garand would be cool, but afaik it cant be done.
Surplus and old guns are the best and worst thing for me. I love old guns. However my eyes are shit for distance; despite being an avid small game hunter that can spot a grey squirrel on leaves and near grey treetrunks 60-70+ yards out, iron sights can be torture when I have anything but one of those massive shoot-n-see targets with a 4"x6" red center and I don't think I'll ever hunt small game with irons. Maybe deer with irons. I don't seem to do bad with irons at the range when I try but I feel so much more confident with a scope FWIW. That does mean I get to buy used D&T'd surp and old hunting rifles at a possible discount and use a scope of choice with no guilt, though.
>scopes
I tend to like the $300 Leupold scopes for their toughness and zero holding capability FWIW but even that price is a big ask at times when you really stretch thin on cash (ie. you just bought a gun, and ammo, and...). Their rings are dirt cheap, though (~$30) and they also work better than $30 rings ever should. And at that price they even have torque specs for the fasteners which is a LOT more than I can say about many other brands I have to throw a wild guess out for and hope I don't strip the chinesium-tier aluminum ring's threads.

Fug forgot to comment on that. I have no real measurements; I'm pretty much just tracing the stock and cutting the channel to roughly the specs I can work out from the half of the original handguard I do have. Rough (eyeballed) measurements and shaping is done via my favorite method: "Damn, I can't afford to replace this part at these prices! Oh I know, I'll buy the part anyways so I can measure it and make it myself anyways and double the cost." LOL. Weirdly enough the front handguard "lifts" off the stock with the real original HG I have as well (back at the "fingers" aside the rear sight) so it's not my wood being out-of-flat, it's the forestock. Measuring would take too long unless I was CNCing it (god I wish). This is 100% trace with a pencil, plane the thing down to roughly the right shape, use HF gouges to make the barrel channel, sand, sand, sand, files?, sand some more, find out the barrel still rubs, sand some more, huh I wonder how close I am to punching through this skinny piece of wood, oh god the barrel band channel has been skewed this whole time, use a box cutter like a chisel, sand some more, okay it fits, sand some more, and it's still oversize.

I've sold 14 guns in the last 5 years and don't miss a single one of them; I wouldn't have sold them if I still had any affection for them. These are all strictly emotional investments to me so I consider the money spent on them irrecoverable because in order to recover that money I would have to give up the gun. So if there comes a time when I don't feel anything for a gun I consign it to a local auctioneer.

Oh wow you're right! I didn't notice. It's self-evident given the japanese name, ใคๅผๅฐ้, since "ใค" is the katakana (script for foreign loan words) for the letter "i".

despite the absurd amount of cosmoline the magwell and barrel were rusty as fuck, and took about 6 hours of meticulous scrubbing with various pipe cleaners and copper brushes to get it presentable. The rifling unfortunately is so gone I cannot land two shots on the same target unless I use the proper rounded tip 6.5 carcano ammo. Spitzers just shit the bed and fly in any which direction. Euro-spec turn of the century ammo was SIGNIFICANTLY hotter than generic modern loads.
.32ACP made by the krauts and frogs in WWI were HOT AS FUCK, almost on par with 9mm loads produced in the US at the same time.
Meanwhile 'Murrican .38APC was almost as hot as modern .38Super.
SAAMI specs and modern 'murrican reloading manuals are ultra-conservatives and cucked as fuck to appease the American corporate liability lawyers.
You can easily exceed the maximum pressures in modern reloading manuals with at least %30 with zero risk of anything actually exploding provided you aren't shooting the worst and most niggeriffic cast-zinc Saturday night special imaginable.

Yeah. I got a TS when they first rolled in early 2020 and immediately ordered 200rds of PPU at 65cpr. Had the exact same issues as you and chalked it up to being a 100+ year old WWI gun. Found out only a few months ago that PPU loaded the wrong size bullets, so they're too small to engage the rifling. Check your bullet diameter with a set of calipers, or by lot code. Can't remember if they even fixed the issue.

As for the metal, I also boiled the parts and oiled them. I think I just used ballistol.
Definitely not the most professional or thorough restoration job, but it's at least clean and functional.

Mostly just for some amount of protection after the deep cleaning. I'd read somewhere that they originally used raw flax seed oil back in the day, and it gives a slightly darker look than BLO, so I went with that. I prioritize originality over something that might look nicer but be inaccurate. More coats probably wouldn't hurt, but it's stored indoors in a cool dry area now so I'm not too concerned about it.

everything you listed are examples of specific collections.
Having 5 random guns without any specification is not a collection.
Having 5 major variations of the same gun that cover the various stages of production is a great collection.
Collection vs accumulation is determined all in the dedication to a specific topic.
You can have 100 random shitty guns and still not a have a collection.

Can't say I ever used it in a barrel but you could use DIY evaporust. It WILL remove bluing (bluing = stable rust) but as long as you cork up the muzzle, keep it from evaporating, and keep it from spilling (muzzle down) after filling it up from the chamber end, it should be fine. Wait ~24-48h, pour out, spray some soap in the barrel, use a bore brush on a cleaning rod to clean out the remaining gunk (it will be barely hanging on), run some hot water through it for a while, dry, oil? Again it will remove bluing so definitely be careful but it's not like it's instant. According to tests by Backyard Ballistics, it pretty much won't touch any metal that isn't rusty.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVYZmeReKKY
I usually use it on parts that either aren't blued (ie. not usually guns) or things that have so much rust that the best thing to do is start from bare metal. Inside of a barrel isn't blued so it shouldn't be an issue. Not sure what it might do to chrome lined barrels.

IME vinegar sucks for rust removal and I've already managed to make rust worse with it lol. 3% vinegar to 97% water is what you get at the store and is more than likely what you have. Here's a shopping list that will get you ready for rust removal no matter where you are in the US because you more than likely have a Walmart within an hour drive:
>Citric acid, canning/glass jar aisle: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mrs-Wages-Citric-Acid-for-Home-Canning-12-oz-Jar-Dairy-Free-1-Count/1940987636 ~$5-6
>Washing Soda: https://www.walmart.com/ip/ARM-HAMMER-Super-Washing-Soda-Powder-Laundry-Detergent-Booster-Household-Cleaner-55-oz/19407690 ~$5-6
>Dawn Dish Soap: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dawn-Ultra-Liquid-Dish-Soap-Dishwashing-Liquid-Grease-Removal-Original-18oz/1095568875 ~$3
That easy. If you can't find washing soda you can use Baking Soda but you need more IIRC. I just prefer to use the washing soda instead, easier. The huge box also lasts forever; you can get it in a ~3-4lb box which is what I have. I think that was like $7-9 when I bought it last.

Have you tried pulling a bullet and dropping it down the barrel, tip into the muzzle? If it gets down the barrel any appreciable distance your barrel is worn the fuck out, potentially was bored out oversized from the factory if it still has visible rifling left, and needs replacing. I had that exact issue with an M1917 Enfield, didn't fully realize just how bad it was till I got a .30-06 muzzle wear gauge and it went halfway down the barrel before stopping. I then proceeded to spend pretty much the price of the rifle rebarreling her.

In the video linked in the first reply. Here's the timestamp:
https://youtu.be/fVYZmeReKKY?t=185
But also here it is in text because I hated when I had to rewind like 12 times to write it down myself:
>1L Water
>100g Citric Acid
>40g Washing Soda (or 63g Baking Soda)
>Dawn Dish Soap (to taste)
Add the citric acid to the water. Stir until completely dissolved (warm water helps). SLOWLY add the washing soda into the solution and stir each time you add some until completely dissolved and the fizzing calms down. Adding all of it at once can make it overflow as it will fizz VIOLENTLY. Add a reasonable amount of Dawn. I wouldn't add any more than he does in his video. Personally if you want to make much more than what would fit in a large ball jar, I'd buy two citric acid "cans". The first will last a while but once you start going "hey I have these rusty tools I never felt like cleaning..." and you get a third of a 5 gallon bucket full of old junk then you realize just how much you're going to use. Also btw this is storable just like Evaporust. Buy a 5 gallon bucket and lid or a 6 pack of the gallon Ball jars and you're set, just don't let the jars sit in a garage out outside where it might freeze because, you know, expansion and glass. Probably even if stored in a bucket as well.

Never thought about doing that but I don't think I'm invested enough in this gun to try re-barreling it. Sounds like I'll be selling it unless I can only get pennies for it.

YW. Rust is sooooo much easier to deal with when you have that solution sitting just waiting to be used. It even goes from clear to yellow to yellow-green to green to dark green to black like real Evaporust as it gets used up but at a fraction of the price! Since learning about DIY Evaporust, my tools have never looked better and I've never been more willing to buy or save rusty tools than once I learned about that solution. When I say the rust wipes off, I really do mean it. If a wire brush or steel wool (I prefer #1 when cleaning) doesn't touch it in a couple swipes, back in it goes. But again, it WILL remove bluing so be careful about where you use it. The whole part goes from rusty to this weird zinc paste grey look. Should almost rinse right off with hot water and soap. A little steel wool helps too. I'll have to see if I can take a pic of something I've had sitting in the solution tomorrow; I know I have a long drillbit submerged halfway I keep flipping but I might have other stuff still in that bucket.
Another tip I keep tucked away is that rust can be converted back to bluing simply by boiling the rusty blued part in a pasta pot. Large parts can be steamed (attach a wide PVC pipe to the lid of a pot with holes drilled in it or make a "lid" with steam holes drilled in it using a piece of metal/plywood). Mark Novak has some videos on that. You have to degrease before (though the water really does it just fine IME), then boil/steam, then knock the rust off with ~#0000 or slightly coarser steel wool, then oil. I honestly prefer taking small parts out, cleaning the rust off, then chucking them in a jar of oil. Mark uses kerosene in a similar manner IIRC, then he oils them after removing from kerosene. Never tried that.
Another side note is know that it WILL remove paint as well. Citric acid is used as a paint stripper. Hand Tool Rescue seems to show that Evaporust isn't quite so aggressive on paint but I've never compared for myself.

Thanks more. The surface rust came off with oil and paper towel and now it looks better than the original from afar. But that bore rust is that good stuff I wouldnโt even try with a brass brush despite how orange it looks. Probably wouldnโt effect accuracy either way but I donโt buy firearms that are clapped out enough to experiment on. But I tend to get ahead of myself. I wanna be sure itโs worth doing what I intend ultimately to do to it.

Im thinking of visiting the Cody museum sometime next year. Aside from the museum what else is a fun thing to do out that way. We'd probably stop at Yellowstone along the way. Any based surp stores I should check out?
