1. If you send 20 guys on bikes then some might make it through and consolidate in some bush near a Ukranian position. If those guys aren't spotted and liquidated you will eventually end up with 20 guys who will then attack said position and maybe or maybe not take it.

2. Send in small groups of 2-5 men on foot to sneak in between Ukraine positions to ambush them in the backline and cause chaos.

It's not like they can't scrounge up a BTR-60, T-62 or BMP to send in with their meatwaveviks but the material they're wasting is more valuable than they are so they don't bother.

We'll start with the obvious, ALLEGED refurbishment rate. Russia has so far lied about every single production rate they've talked about. Secondly, they're taking increasingly decrepit, poorly stored, cannibalized, and outright stolen from hulks and doing whatever they can to return them to service. This most likely includes turning four or five hulks into one usable tank depending on how trashed they are. Third, we've seen constant video evidence of armor being thrown in piecemeal multiple times a week for months now. If you're building a "strategic reserve" you don't take shit straight from the factory and toss it randomly at a basically frozen front.

And let's, for the sake of argument, assume I'm 100% incorrect. What happens when they send an armored column to Pokrovsk? When the Ukranians release their stock of anti-tank weapons against it? Even assuming they manage to capture Pokrovsk what next? They couldn't make their armored fists work in 2022 when they had complete superiority in every capacity: AFVs, artillery, transport, professional soldiers. They now have everything Ukraine has been holding onto directed at these tanks which represent many months if not years of refurbishment. They now lack the logistics train to supply them. They lack the air forces to cover them. They lack the artillery to support them. Even if they did capture the sixth dimensional hyperfortress Ukraine just falls back to the twin cities behind them and russia spends another couple years trying to grind them down only now they've lost another several hundred to a thousand irreplacable tanks while digging deeper into the rust heap.

There is no reserve that will be used. Russia is scraping the barrel for any form of armor. They will never make an armored push again.

Sort of, but its more accurate to say in some conditions it is possible to detect tunneling with seismic. Its rarely easy, frequently would be extremely difficult, and in some substrates its literally impossible.

There are a lot of difficulties using seismic for tunnel detection. I'm a petroleum geologist and a big part of the job is seismic interpretation. It's a pretty interesting set of techniques so I'll explain some of the limitations of it.

First, you have the sensor problem. You are probably thinking you can just use first arrival triangulation on a seismometer like we do for earthquakes. This world for earthquakes, because the signal is fuck-heug, like more energy than a nuclear detonation, and the exact lithologies, pore fluid types, and strat coulmn between the fault plane and the sensor are known. Also, they have very deep foci generally, way deeper than any mining operation so there is almost no surface noise interference. And finally, earthquakes aren't capable of counterplay against a geologist trying to locate them. A sapping crew can do all sorts of things to fuck up first arrival times and cause wave bending, and generally make triangulation functionally impossible. Installing random sheets of metal in surface trenches at weird angles, leaving some galleries flooded (not dewatering them) so you get massive lateral amplitude changes, timing your blasting with other random surface detonations elsewhere (or subsurface, if you want to be a real dick), tunneling directly below a major impedance boundary, the list goes on and on.

And thats if you're forced to have to work with a substrate like endurated sandstone or limestone or granite or something. With Salt you don't have to even blast, you just spray it with a garden hose to tunnel ahead. There is no source signal to even try to triangulate.

So passive is out. I can explain why active won't work either if you're interested.

Firstly, it's like an attackers advantage here, where the counter sappers of WW1 had the technological edge because we could not yet well operationalize sound making techniques until ADM Hess opened the door and ASW and the Oil Patch (and weirdly also Auto-tune) started their collaboration. Sort of close But your question shows how easily a group can defeat seismic sensing. When you have an impedance change, which is basically a density change with a significant, complex modifying function of relative position to the sensor and youngs modulus of the formation. A tunnel shaft will absolutely create a major impedance change that can be imaged, but only about a 70m+/- vertical resolution under ideal circumstances. And you can use that impedance vulnerability into an advantage if you tunnel along where the two different densities meet, like the middle of the wavelet

For active, you need 2 things, a source and a gather. The source is, on land, usually a Betsy gun (like an 8 ga shotgun mounted on a dolly, its what you see them using in the first scene of the original Jurrasic Park), dynamite, or a Thumper truck, those are in order of what you would use for increasingly large areas of observation. The gather are geophones, they are arranged in a grid over what you want to look at in the subsurface. Its important you know precisely where they are located relative to the source so you can calculate amplitude versus offset, basically the slant range to the reflector.

So, basically you blow up the dynamite which propagates a compressional force into the earth. As it goes down, at each change in the impedance of the rock it encounters (basically the speed of sound in a rock) a small amount of energy is reflected back, which the geophones hear. So you take all those two way travel times to different "reflectors" and then figure out the velocity of the wave between each and convert your two way travel time between each reflector into depth instead of time.

So you can probably see the problems with this for detecting a Ukrainian sapper tunnel. Putting out a gather in the grey zone seems like a really good way to get killed. Secondly the arrangement is very sensitive to surface noise. When we do a shot like that we have to have the rancher move his cattle to the entire other side of the ranch so their footsteps (hoofsteps?) Don't drown the return signal, which is very faint. You have all kinds of explosions and gunfire in the greyzone so that would be a major problem. Thirdly, the raw TWTT depths are not very precise since the impedance shift between two formations is not typically very stark. So the raw data has a depth resolution of about 150-200 feet, due to the wavelength of the compressional wave and other things.

So we can refine that using well ties and a process called inversion. Basically we take a core in or near the area of the gather so we can ground truth the formation thicknesses and then use the seismic to image between known control points.
