Is it time for the US Navy to think about cope cage armor? Maybe nets to keep FPV drones out of an aircraft carriers hanger bay.

A cumulative charge can pierce this lid. What happens if one of the VLS cells explodes?

The VLS compartments are not isolated from each other at this level.

Magazine explosion that destroys the ship. The solution to this is the Mark 57 PVLS, but the ship equipped with it was canceled because journalists lied about it being bad and expensive, and Congress and /k/ blindly believe whatever opinions they read on twz.
Anonymous No.64388984
They should just put the VLS on a barge and tow it.

But the cells are separate, and each comes with a fire suppression system. Unlikely to sympathetically chain one after another.

That venting and fire suppression is designed to deal with the rocket motors, not with a literal bomb going off inside the ship.

Unmanned water vehicles mean that torpedo nets might be viable again, at least for port and littoral operations.

Hah, that a fact? They must be pissing their pants if that's the case.

The US Navy has zero credibility since the LCS boondoggle, the continuing professionalism problems in the Navy Seals, and their meandering mission of satisfying corporate lobbies and mission bloat

Its against doctrine to fly FPVs into the hanger deck.

Most of the time? Nothing. Rarely? The warhead or fuel goes up, causing the lid to be pushed up and the detonation being vented.

>>64388976
Well, except for the launch canisters themselves, which provide their own compartmentalisation as they are lowered into the cells.

Ship kaput.
Mk-57 Vertical Launching System was designed to prevent sympathetic detonations of missiles. They are located in one row and warheads are separated by blast bulkheads inbuilt into Mk-57 (plus incentive munitions redesigns of missiles) so detonation of missiles warheads is localized in one cell.
But others ships its over.
