It was actually a huge clusterfuck saved only by the small scale of the invasion and the fact that the Cubans/Grenadines were even more retarded than we were. Highlights include:

>Navy SEALs drowning in the ocean on insertion because they forgot to check the tide charts
>a platoon of Navy SEALs getting routed and almost destroyed by one single BTR-60 because they forgot to pack a LAW
>US troops forced to use tourist maps and asking locals for directions because there is no intelligence on the island
>a platoon of Rangers had to use a civilian landline phone to call their barracks CQ in the US to call for fires because the radio frequencies were changed without their knowledge
>first hostage rescue attempt fails when an entire flight of Blackhawks crashes into each other on landing approach
>more bronze stars and combat patches are awarded by the Army than troops that were allocated for the invasion

This. It actually contributed to the whole inter-service reforms called Goldwater-Nichols to get the branches to cooperate with each other because of those fuckups. The U.S. was lucky to have experienced that in Grenada rather than in the Persian Gulf a decade later.

Grenada actually had a quite bit of firepower at its disposal since it was a transit point for Soviet arms going to Latin America

>12 APCs (mainly BTR-60s and BRDM-2s)
>12 anti-aircraft guns (ZPU-4s and ZU-23-2s)
>291 submachine guns
>6,330 rifles (mainly AKMs)
>5.6 million rounds of ammunition

They could have easily mounted a protracted resistance in the jungles with that arsenal for at least a few months if they had felt inclined to do so.

>limited objective
>massive, overwhelming force
>surprise

Also, it was, like any invasion, a close-run thing. Going from memory, the attempt to rescue a bunch of political prisoners carried out by special forces was particularly harrowing, due to heavy AAA presence on the helicopters' flight path. The speed and surprise the US achieved came at the cost of the entire invasion being a rush job. Divine intervention probably kept it from turning into a grand scale Desert-One style clusterfuck.

I think the main thing was Reagan's adoption of a rollback strategy towards Soviet influence + wanting the U.S. appear like it was strong after Vietnam and countering the impression that the U.S. was in decline. The Republicans (especially) don't like far-left governments in the Western Hemisphere, and there was a political crisis between the Grenadian communists which provided an opportunity to invade and depose them. Relatively low-risk / low-cost op aimed at this small Marxist regime in the Caribbean.

It's like Trump bombing Iran and striking these boats off the coast of Venezuela. It's similar I think.

>>64398208
The communist leadership there had also been educated in British universities and were left-wing activists as students. It's like those Columbia University students who were protesting Israel, if some of them were thirdie exchange students who went back home and then seized power, and then some of the military guys (also Soviet-aligned) killed them during a bloody internal purge. The leader was Maurice Bishop who was killed by his own guys. It's wild.

We definitely instigated the conflict on the basis of needing to regain some level of national prestige after the humiliation of Vietnam. Sure Americans were in danger, but a whole ass invasion? It was a grossly disproportionate response.

This.
Also, remember Reagan got elected a few years earlier partly because Carter COMPLETLY screwed up the Iran Hostage Crisis, and leaving many Americans feeling angry and humiliated.

One of the main "sales pitches" for teh ncessity of invasion was the possible threat to several hundred American college students that had been going to a cheap-o medical school on Grenada, and the possibility that they too would be taken hostage.

In reality, they hadn't been allowed to leave, but the Grenadians really hadn't bothered them much, and they were recovered unharmed. They WERE quite happy to be rescued, though, since it COULD have gone bad, and seeing smiling American students liberated by heavily-armed US troops went a long way toward justifying the invasion for many Americans, outside the geopolitical/anti-communist thing.

That aspect was also woven into the Heartbreak Ridge movie.

Though Panama had its fair number of hiccups, too, like any complex military operation (airborne tanks getting stuck in the mud, Rangers having to de-rig, then RE-rig in the planes because whether they were jumping or landing got changed several times on the flight down, SEALs getting in a messy firefight at Noriega's private plane, etc)

Both Grenada and Panama are lessons that military ops rarely fail because TOO MUCH force is used. You can carefully crack a walnut to get the nut out, or you can smash it with a hammer. Cracking is more elegant, but using the hammer ALWAYS works.

Carter was Commander in Chief. "The buck stops here", as another president kept a reminder on his desk.

He takes advice from his advisors, men he chose to advise him, but ultimately he has to decide whether the risk is worth it. If Grenada had been a disaster, Reagan would have had to own that. EAGLE CLAW was tried only after EVERY other non-military option was attempted.

I don't hate Carter; he was pretty clear that his #1 priority was to get the hostages back alive. But in doing so, he humiliated the country with images like above for night after night for a year, and it opened other Americans abroad to being taken hostage, because the terrorists saw it was easy to do, with no consequences.

NTA but TAYART was right and you skipped the key part:
Reagan's lackeys literally made a crooked deal with the antichrist to get the hostages back. There's at least one confession and one separate death bed confession, but the real tell is Iran-Contra. What more do you need? Hostages get released on inauguration day AND weapons get treasonously funnelled to that same regime to skirt the Boland Ammendment? Really? A coincidence? fuck no

I'd argue there's a good case it has to be real war. Sure, people might get killed in training accidents, but I don't think that's going to set enough peoples' hair on fire to get the kind of political pressure you need to get entrenched brass who are set in their ways to consider reforms.

It was also a way to regain some face after the barracks bombing in beirut. Hezbollah more or less killed americans with impunity and Grenada was a much easier target than chasing after terrorist cells.
