Human waves is kinda a meme. The Chinese were just sneaking in close under darkness and waiting for everyone to be as close as possible to UN lines and all just jumped up and attacked. To a GI this looks like thousands of Chinese charging at them, when in reality they just weren't paying close enough attention.

The Chinese did not have the logistical capabilities to do actual human waves even if they wanted to. They couldn't even keep their army fed and armed throughout the entire war. It's why they stalled around the 38th parallel.

The west is ethically obligated by its own value system to be shitty at warfare. In the west no one can be killed unless they first attack someone else unjustifiably, and because the west always thinks its wars are justified, every single casualty is unacceptable.

The chinese still have "it is good to die for the benefit of the nation" in their honor code and can employ tactics that get around the west's reliance on indirect fire, long range weapons, and air/naval superiority, at the cost of the casualty rate.

In an actual direct war with the US, the chinese would throw meat they didn't have at the front lines and kill any civilian that does not immediately surrender the use of their property. They would behave like a bronze age warrior culture and crush the americans through sheer immorality. Long term they would lose but the damage would be horrific. Because they ARE a bronze age warrior culture.

The good news is "throw meat at the enemy and see what happens" tactics are ultimately incompatible with modern warfare. The Chinese only took ground in Korea due to overstretched western supply lines and mountainous terrain.
Once defenses are properly prepared, all that meat just hits the grinder and melts.

more important is the fact that the PLA wasn't a green force, a good chunk of their officer corps had been in the fight since the long march or slightly later, with decades of practical command experience, many of the rank and file soldiers were veterans of multiple campaigns.
