Go play a modern fps game and try to hit something flying in a non-linear fashion with a gun, it's hard as fuck. Now add IRL stress factors (you probably die if you miss), the weight and recoil of the gun, a target 1/100th the size, and the surprise factor (war is 99% waiting 1% violence.)

I understand you need to push guys to the front, but if you're gonna issue shotguns you gotta teach them about spread pattern, point of aim vs pattern center and target lead. I really think a day shooting trap and skeet would unironically be a good primer for shotgun troops.

Unironically, why not just give troopers a 4 meter long telescopic umbrella. All you have to do is click a button towards the drone and it'll explode much further away from you than you'd like. Shit, even an ordinary rake would be preferable to nothing at all.

Also people here hate to hear it but birdshot is not good enough for drones fyi. FPVs are not living and are way harder to deflect than a bird, who has spent millions of years optimizing being lightweight and fluffy as shit. This soldier was very lucky that this drone was extremely slow and lethargic (fiber optic???)

the logic behind the controllers operates much faster. A quick look on amazon shows a ~50 dolliarido flight-controller operates at 168 Mhz. That's 168 MILLION TIMES A SECOND that it has an opportunity to respond and adjust. if you want to be fancy and spend 168 shekels on an even faster FCS you get 5.8 gHz which is 5.8 billion times a second.

Now the drone PIID loop has a mite of overhead so not all clock cycles are free to respond to a propeller woopsie the moment it happens, but there are a lot of cycles in the newer quadcopters.

It is ass. Absolutely horrible. Those sights are not meant for shotguns, and are only used because they make it look more "tactical", whereas a simple bead would have worked much better. They are far too constricting and make it nearly impossible to actually lead the target. A red dot could make that shotgun work, but really if they just made a shotgun a shotgun instead of trying to dress it up as a rifle it would have been much better suited for the task.

Spread yes, but that's actually not what is needed in that situation. You actually want a tight spread so that you can engage the drone before it gets closer.
Ask bird hunters, they always want the tightest chokes possible so they can shoot the duck from the other side of the lake. It gets ridiculous how much they will pay for a custom choke.

Sig has an interesting option on some of their pistol RDS, you can turn the dot off and only have a larger ring.
I could see that being potentially useful, but really I think the best option is to just have whoever is using the shotgun use a bead and just shoot an absolute fuckton of shot through the gun to train.

I've been shooting trap with my father and uncles since I was ~7.
All of them are competitive, and one was actually Olympic level in the 80s.
We used to have monthly competitions among our family.
Everyone reloads in their basements. I've legit probably run 100,000 shells through shotguns in my life.

When I started shooting with my friends, I had a really, really hard time using their guns, because most of them had outfitted actual front and rear sights to the gun, and I realized I actually don't even use the bead at all when I shoot, it's just intuitive reflex snap shooting.
I align my head and shoulder with the barrel and that's it.
It probably isn't realistic to expect that to be viable with general infantry, but I think it's not completely unreasonable to have a designated "anti drone gunner" in a unit now, with how common drones are going to be going forward.

You fellas think that giving the Ukrainians small machine pistols/carbines with bolts lighter than regular to reliably cycle snake shot would be a good option?

Make the barrels short and smooth bore also, I think it would be a better solution compared to a full length shotgun.

Surley 16-40 rounds of snake shot at 600-1200 rounds per minute and 30 shot per load would be effective.

I know snake shot is weak but you only need to disable the drones rotors.

Shooting snake shot at a drone would be the equivalent of throwing pocket sand at it. By the time its close enough for the little lead spheres to start chipping the plastic, you would be well within the drones kill radius.
