It could be an attempt to strengthen logistics.
>Have different but similar types of aircraft from multiple manufacturers.
It doesn't matter what system, save that your own infrastructure can repair it quickly and get it back in the fight versus how much is required to service that aircraft long-term. I'm not sure but I would guess that turboprop airplanes are not as viable in the region as fighter jets for QRF operations, which is what anyone neighboring China needs. China has a big army but, it has to travel by sea to be threat. Best insurance is quick, nimble, and powerful jets that can intercept and interdict incoming Chinese aggressor craft, be it Sea or Air.
You don't need to win, just beat them off of you.
As an added measure, defense-in-depth ground based forces to make the invaders pay for every inch.
Then it's just a matter of protecting those ground based resources, which is also in the same ballpark as the jets that engage long distance threats.
Indonesia is still "shopping" but is also in the testing phase of homegrown development. What works? What doesn't? What's viable? What's the benchmark?
In a decade, Indonesia will have their own homegrown "do everything" multi-role fighter.
