Why don't tanks have flash hiders?
They make a very visible flash, wouldn't it be useful to hide that a little bit?

Because the muzzle blast would obliterate it.
Also, if you have tough about a thing, then be assured that people getting payed bank in the military to think about the dame exact thing have already tought about it.
We don't see any flash suppressors and so they are not worth it.
Anonymous No.64404189 [Report]
Fins on HEAT rounds opening unevenly, striking the tines etc.
Potentially SABOT petals breaking apart early depending on the design
Muzzle signature is still pretty fucking huge anyway and only reduced in visible spectrum, not thermal.
Doesn't do anything to reduce recoil which is the only actual reason some large calibre guns still use muzzle devices

Wouldn't make enough difference in signature to make a difference, also flash hiders are known to cause serious problems with sabots.

And yet muzzle brakes work just fine. I think you're lacking quite bit in critical reasoning skills.

That's so they can't sabotage the barrel and turn it into a banana peel

They exist, they are just way too big to ever be practical. If they were mounted on the barrel it would just snap off or the tank would nosedive into the ground from the weight. Like the first anon said, compared to a rifle, a tank round being fired is like a bomb going off

And yes I know suppressors and flash hiders aren't the same. But in this case they might as well be the same. The flash hiders you would need would be about that size, since the flash of a tank going off is exponentially bigger than a gun going off

They are not the same size.
How big is a rifle suppressor? How big is a rifle flash hider? What about a rifle muzzle brake?

too much flash for a practical flash hider
for it to work, it'd be way too big, and thats ontop of shells already having an assload of anti-flash chemicals too

Because smoothbore barrels can be thinner, they are less strong to support attachments.

The reason tanks don't have them anymore is that sabots can impact the baffles but guess what buddy, there ain't no baffles in a flash suppressor

Anonymous No.64404613 [Report]
You probably need a ton of additional length for such a thing to actually be effective with large calibres, at which point it's going to cause more problems than it will solve
Anonymous No.64404621 [Report]
Unless it is a rapid-fire weapon, flash from firing is unlikely to be a problem for the shooter.

Because fucking look at the thing, it's not properly portable and that setup is used explicitly to not give the nearby town long term hearing damage when they do fire practice. It exists because of a situational concern for public health and noise pollution, not because it would be getting used in case of actual combat.
Anonymous No.64404867 [Report] >>64405013

>they are not the same size
Because a 5.56 has barely any flash to begin with, but a lot of gas to slow down. Whereas something like an artillery piece still has a metric fuckton of gas to slow down, but also a flash big enough to rock your world.

>>64404412
You're right, a 140mm millimeter flash hider on a 120mm M1 Abrams cannon would definitely not violently Kentucky Ballistics you from miles to the left and right the first time it is fired and stay intact from the tank-sized fireball coming out of the muzzle. What was I thinking?
Anonymous No.64404892 [Report] >>64404950 >>64411888
>>64404519
Because a muzzle break allows the pressure to "safely" escape. A flash hider in this case has solid walls and thus has to pretty much contain not all, but a lot of pressure. Look at this webm and tell me what would happen if you put steel plates on those vents there

Yea I think that anon was being ironic.
That said, put the thing on a tracked vehicle and asside from it still being hilariously impractical, you also get tanks docking into the backdoor of a gigantic penis to blast their load at the enemy.
Again not practical, but I appreciate the grotesque imagery.
Anonymous No.64404916 [Report] >>64405587

I could perhaps imagine maybe a niche specialist application for silenced artillery, but I think you may as well skip the whole tank part and just make it for a Howitzer or something like that, so that the tank can go and do tank things instead.

You can cut down 5.56mm to a fucking 8.5" barrel and have whopping big fireballs, and it's still going to be completely insubstantial compared to the muzzle blast from a tank's main gun.
You're not going to be able to usefully reduce visual signature with a flashhider on a cannon like this, and it's not going to do shit to its other signatures.

>You can cut down 5.56mm to a fucking 8.5" barrel and have whopping big fireballs,
That was 16″ barrel. Humble birdcage reduced flash by 10000 times.

Just a tiny flash hider can reduce the flash magnitude by hundreds of times. Why wouldn't the same happen with a tank?
Anonymous No.64405187 [Report]
>>64405167
Because it's still like a fucking bomb going off.

>>64405037
Yeah, and the flashhider still makes a difference in that case, but for a big 120mm cannon, you're not going to NOT have a colossal and thundering fireball at the muzzle, you can at best hope to make it a bit milder so that they maybe think it's a smaller cannon, but still a cannon.

I think Russia has some suppressed mortars which honestly is one of the few things i could see it being useful with. most big guns are either too far away for that to be a concern or aren't going to be tasked down to such a stealthy mission. Giving some close range fire support a little bit of stealth could be pretty nice to have

Why does noone put muzzle brakes on MBTs cannons? As some anons already pointed out it's because it messes with the discarding sabots, the same thing goes for flash hiders like your picrel, wich is on an artillery piece so there's no worry about sabots.
On the other hand three piece flash hiders shouldn't interfere with sabots and while, as someone I'm to lazy to (you) here pointed out, the signature will still be enormous, it'll be reduced nonetheless, wich can help you conceal yourself or at least deceive the enemy.
