because of troops having fun with sustained full auto the none of these supposed benefits were realized. piston systems are only marginally cleaner and cooler at a significantly greater expense.
The real maintenance problem with small arms comes from full auto fire which causes a tremendous amount of heat to build up in the system that more or less destroys the entire gun over a short period of time.

I love my side charging handle tho. I am going to be sad to see it gone. Also there is something about the integrated front sight/gas block that completes the look. I understand why it's got to go but I will miss it

It's clearly a design by committee so it's not FN's fault the charging handle is reciprocating as they were only following a requirement.
However the ability to forgive FN for a mistake that wasn't theirs to begin with does not make the SCAR a better rifle. Just because there's context behind a design flaw it doesn't mean it's less of a flaw.

Real reason is FNH absolutely scalped SOCOM on their initial pricing and they can't offer the SCAR (or equivalents) at a lower rate to anyone else without it looking like they shafted the DoD and possibly having contracts cancelled or renegotiated.
