I went to a European military preparation boarding school for fiveyears, stuff like orienteering, glider instruction, weapons maintenance, long range shooting, infantry tactics and martial arts were a mandatory part of the cirriculum along with a 'spartan' ethos that liek the younger kids having to fight for food and collective punishments, those that did not shape up and caused failure ended up an heroing. I think it was cruel. Our PE instructors were all ex millitary, 8KM runs every morning, living life by timed bells. Having to run up and down a hill if your hair was not cropped to the milmeter or you failed in a test. We also had to achieve A grades in everything no excptions or group punishments. Some kids are just not able to take it. A lot of my peers went on to SF officers and in some cases spooks. I got a place in a top university as a scholarship and found officer training a holiday. My point is though that that 'system' works with a high attrition rate, you get an outstanding education, you also get dead and mentally broken kids and a lot of them. This is NOT what the Russians are doing, it takes years in a closed enviroment with preselection and is costly and intensive.I remember one kid to tried to run away and we all had to go out and comb the local countryside until he was caught. He was put in solitary in a room beside the mess in the dark for a month with just a bowl of porridge a day. You could hear him screaming to himself when we queued to enter the mass after about two weeks.To to this day I resent my father for having volunteered me but accept his rationale that the threat of communism at the time warranted good soldiers being made.
